I'd have to disagree -- this fangame has physics and gameplay that GREATLY rivals that of Retro Sonic. It's about how you use the programming language/scripting language, not what it is.
Sonic XG Screenshots, what d'you think?

Looks fairly nice. Few things to note:
1. Art reuse is not cool - you've got a 16-million colour palette to choose from complete with alpha transparencies, so it'd be a shame to squander that. Redraw, don't reuse.
2. This is screaming for a Saturn port. Doitdoitdoit you know you want to.
3. I have no Nazi ninja. We are Grammar Nazis, and we are legion.

Sadly, I remember little to nothing of the original Sonic XG.
Here's a reminder.
Edit: Just for anyone who doesen't know how to Google it.

My only complaint is that the camera doesn't seem right. It's too far left. Other then that it's godly.

My partner in crime Joe has the following for your acknowledgment:
"Right, I can't seem to register here as the quiz is down, so I have my trusty sidekick posting for me instead.
The game is being coded in MMF, and I have got it to a fairly comparable level to the official genesis games, including swanky swingball and rope physics, anti-gravity, pretty much everything you'd expect in a Sonic game. I would love to do it in C++, however it's only something we do in our spare time, so after everything that's been completed so far I really can't see us changing for something that would take even longer. Just don't be too worried about the use of MMF, we're both perfectionists when it comes to this sort of thing.
Also, the camera is off centre in those shots due to the current system lagging behind the character, eventually it will be more CD-esq, panning around the characters."
Good show.
