I have found an article about SA1 preview, with (of course) beta pics of SA1 and even a concept art (sketch) for Lost World...

Also, the Chao has different wings than normal. Those were used later for the "Angel Chao", in Sonic Adventure 2.
So this is more proof that they started this project using the original Sonic designs. We have this Sonic in the VMU, the Sonic R models in Sky Chase and the graphics in the pinball machine. It's a shame that they never released any screens of a beta version with the old designs.
I wonder if they ever made any high-quality 3D "classic" models before the whole redesign, or if they just used the Sonic R ones until then...
