Quality spritework from Sonic Team.

From the same issue - a Sonic 3 suppliment with all sorts of prototype goodies. Some of these shots may be new.

Would this not fit best in the Supreme Topic of 'Other' Knowledge Thread?

Yes. But I've posted prototype stuff in that topic before and it's been completely overlooked.

Fair enough. So Sonic used to cosplay as Ristar, eh?

Dem temporary sprites. His arms looked terrible on the surfing sprites that were cut too. Looks like they just quickly edited Sonic 2's sprites for the time being.

Really cool finding. Finally we can have a good look at greenhouse hydrocity.
Are those sonic sprites just Sonic 2 sprites or edited Sonic 2 sprites?

One on the later pages mentions Part 1, Part 2 and the Limited Edition. I didn't know Sega was so ready to admit that the game was split in half, even before S&K was out.

This is really cool! It's always nice to see prototype images of Sonic 3 - there's nowhere near enough of them compared to some of the other games.

I wonder if there's any interesting information written in the articles? Would anyone possibly be willing to translate them at all?

It never looked green to me, just saturated scans basically.

For the record, the game was reviewed in the next issue, with an indentical set of screenshots.

I've recently come across a cache of old German games magazines and am slowly mirroring them to Retro CDN. This particular publisher was running at least three gaming magazines all at the same time, Sega Magazin, Play Time and Mega Fun. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some crossover content, although I can only upload things so fast (feel free to jump in and speed it up).

It's green, it shows up in the final game:

Well if we're going by those, then the coconuts in Angel Island were supposed to be HUGE!

How far into development were S2 sprites still being used? It's interesting that almost all of the level artwork seems to be in its final state but the spritework for Sonic seems to have been changed at the very last minute.

Originally HCZ had a big layer of green grass above the water level. That's what I was referring to.
