If Sega is smart, they'll re-release Shenmue 1 and 2 as part of their Dreamcast Collection re-releases...if they even do that anymore.
If SEGA is smart, they'll have these prepared for when the Kickstarter is successful to cash in on them as soon as possible.
Also I went to bed knowing Yu had tweeted a picture of a forklift at E3 earlier in the day and assuming he was trolling. I wake up and Shenmue 3 has $1.8 million in funding.
Duck races in Shenmue 3 please.
Also fuck yes Shenmue 3.
Can you tell I'm excited? Shenmue 3. Shenmue 3. Shenmue 3.

I believe the last stretch goal is 4 million, correct?
I want this game to surpass all.

Ryo and Shenhua look horrible. What happened to the character designs? Even if everything is WIP, to start off with this just completely discourages me. Ryo looks like he literally aged the 14 years they've been gone (or more) and he's applied lots of makeup to try to look as young as he did then, and Shenhua looks like the pretty actress quit and some lesser attractive generic Chinese girl took her place. I hope they change this...

Yeah no lie what's shown there looks bad. But I believe.
Almost funded, 12 hours have yet to pass.

No way that a mere 2 million is going to be enough for this behemoth. But why would Sony only partially fund it? I'm guessing theyre doing so at least. SEGA haven't sold the right or anything, because it's still being licensed by them and any new IP holder would be shouting it from the rooftops.

They're gauging interest.

First Earthbound Beginnings and now this. E3 has been really generous to cult franchises this year.

So, 14 years eh?....Do we call him Akira Yuki now? Yea I was put off by Ryo's face more then anything. Shenhua, while not as good looking as the original Dreamcast models, did not grate on me as much.
I'll pledge money on Friday.

It would be a reasonable assumption that no serious development has started yet given that they didn't have guaranteed funding, and that everything you see is composed of quick placeholders knocked up to have something to show on the Kickstarter page. I have no doubt the actual game will look nothing like what you currently see, and that the characters and environments will be better refined in terms of both graphical polish and resemblance to their Dreamcast/Xbox-era selves.

Some clarification was put on the FAQ page a little bit ago:
Is this game affiliated with SEGA?
SEGA has officially given us the rights to use the "Shenmue" license.
Are there plans for the HD versions of Shenmue 1 & 2?
The property rights for Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 belong to SEGA, so we are not in a position to comment on that.
Will there be an Xbox/Wii U/Linux/Mac version for Shenmue 3?
Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet.
The last bit messes with my prediction of Sony stepping in to help fund after the initial 2 million was hit. Not so much the PC part, keep in mind Street Fighter V, but a cold "PS4 will be the only console" is what I would have expected. Either way, someone's gotta be pushing them more money, definitely agree that this is an interest check. I'm just curious on who finally bit the bullet on this one.

Sony probably IS funding this- I doubt the budget'll be just 2 millions. Instead, this is probably just to prove there's demand for it.
