He has fangs and his color is grey.
Maybe we finally found the character design Kalinske claims to have rejected?

Wait, he also claimed that he made Sonic blue?

He claimed he rejected a "more goth" Sonic.
Grey's a pretty goth color.

This character is almost like a parody of Tom Kalisnke's "rejected Sonic".

That's pretty funny. That pose makes him look like a drunk looking for the next drink.

Interesting to see how this artwork also seems to imitate Uekawa's style.

Yeah, to me that screams 'parody'. It's the same pose and shading style and everything. And it's even kind of an outlier in the aesthetic of the other artwork.

Anyone thinking this is mocking the Sonic Adventure style should go through Ohshima's Facebook gallery. Maybe then we can finish this claim that Uekawa is to blame for the Adventure art style when it's very clearly Ohshima's.

THIS is Uekawa drawing.

This is Uekawa drawing Sonic. Notice the stiff posing. Notice the use of straight lines in things like the hands. Lots of guidelines to make a figure that loses some energy but is flawlessly sculpted in tridimentional space.

Comparatively, we can say he draws like a Japanese animator. In fact, remember- he was involved with Sonic X.

There's almost a repulsion to using straight lines. Poses don't make sense and that doesn't matter so long as kind of a circular motion is achieved. Metallic painting. Angry looks and tons of fangs (which, incidentally, is one reason I don't buy the current "there never were fangs in Sonic and Kalinske's a liar" theory).

Comparatively, we can say he's a grafitter.

This is not Ohshima mocking Sonic Adventure. Ohshima IS Sonic Adventure. It's no coincidence starting with Adventure 2 the artwork in Sonic started looking more "controlled".

Oshima draws some pretty surreal poses. You guys think he's ever seen AoStH? I really wonder what his thoughts would be on that series. Given his style, he'd probably like it.

This is clearly a parody, and I think it works pretty well. It's pretty neat.

Was it really necessary to quote the entire post just to add a one-line reply?

edit: I'm a dumbass and did the exact same thing.

Even if it's his own art style redux, I still suspect he's spoofing himself and not actually being serious. I can't believe that he would make something so blatantly Sonic-like not as a joke.

I get the feeling he was drawing Sonic expies for laughs. He's got more creativity than that, for sure.

The point about SA1 Sonic feeling a lot more like Oshima than Uekawa is interesting, though I'm not sure if he did those illustrations or not. I feel like he either did the originals and Uekawa edited them, or Uekawa was trying to copy Oshima's style.

That does make me wonder if Oshima actually did the JP 3D Blast artwork or not, though..

Those are credited to Uekawa, IIRC. My theory is that while Ohshima was there, Uekawa was trying to immitate him a bit. Even in the Sonic Adventure concept art you see that the art style is more "controlled" than Ohshima's.

And the thematic is obviously a Sonic jab, the name of the expansion itself points to it, my point is that the art style isn't.

Yeah, that's the impression I get too. Like, a lot of his past designs have been really goofy.

The problem is, I'm not sure many people other than himself derives any amusement out of the goofiness. Even his straight-out goofy designs reeked of "trying too hard".

edit: case in point

It's like an inside joke that no one in the clique really found funny in the first place except that one guy who keeps repeating it.

The two ladies in those illustrations are cute, in my opinion; it's the males that are a bit far out there. In fact, they're so crazy looking, they'd make perfect since for a new Dreamcast RPG. Ooga Booga parties, anybody?

...Am I seeing a different picture there or do I just find those designs pretty good/decent while everyone thinks they're horrible? I swear I saw someone on NeoGAF also saying they were terrible looking. I'm not sure how they are.

I mean, nothing special and a little weird for the two swordsmen, but acting like they're bad feels like hyperbole.

I don't get it either, it feels like a cross between a Puyo Pop and a Wind Waker.
