Dropped a comment on the Labyrinth video. I wanted to say something clever, but it turned into more of an "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."

I mean, I love a good hoax. They're fun to figure out/debate over/etc.

Serious question, who is Chillius03 and why is this noteworthy? Not trying to be rude, just misinformed.

I actually hadn't heard of him until today. Basically, what happened is he had one of his friends / cronies go to #SSRG and advertise "OMG MY FRIEND HAS A SONIC 1 BETA ON VHS!" We all called him out, but they kept insisting it was legit.

My comments on the YouTube video were deleted, probably because this guy wanted to fool people into thinking he was awesome or something. On the Labyrinth video, he mentions that the VHS is worth "$15,256", so I figured he was going to try to con noobs into sending him money to release the "full" video. Thus, I posted this thread in a public forum and linked it to him in a (deleted) YouTube comment, as well as comments on Egor305's reposts.

At least the last Sonic 1 beta hoax had some effort put into it.

+1 I like these kinds of hoaxes because they flare up intrest in finding the real deal.

Although if someone is trying to con money out of people that's not cool.

Some of these kids, man. The hoax business has been strong since 1998 at least. Gotta put much more effort into it nowadays.

Best you can do is deconstruct Sonic 1 and then try to hand craft the beta based on specs we know about from interviews, slap that hack on a flash cart, get it running on a CRT, and tape it.

That's the level of work a hoax needs now to even be convincing or funny, and at that level, it's a wonder why you're wasting talent on a hoax when you may as well code up a whole game on your own.

They just make finding the real thing more difficult, which can make researchers to just give up.

I see what you mean, I didn't really think of it like that.

Tell him we've already got that proto, we got it two weeks ago, dumped it, and it's already available as a ROM to download.

No one told me this! *downloads, plays, laughs*

Serious question though; what is the chances (in %) that a real Sonic 1 prototype will ever turn up? I've kind of lost all hope on it.

*she, not he.
Chillius is a kid from the UK that found her way into a small Skype group that I'm a part of. She always goes on and on and on about some Five Nights at Freddie's fangame that p. much nobody else there cares about, and she used the filter effect from it for the videos and tried to pass them off to us as legit. I had to do a bit of searching in my Skype logs, but here's my response from that time:

Quote

[4/8/2015 6:36:22 PM] Freddy Fredbear.: https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be BETA!!
[4/8/2015 6:36:29 PM] Freddy Fredbear.: I got some Sonic 1 Beta footage from a VHD
[4/8/2015 6:48:43 PM] Ariadome: Sweet.
[4/8/2015 6:49:09 PM] SoNick: 2/10, blue green hill's been done to death and then some and the VHS filter is amateurish and poorly done

Given the wealth of knowledge on the development stages of Sonic 1, how the hell can anyone who at least is capable of doing 1 minute of research gonna fall for that? XD

SoNick, please tell me she's not one of the many spamming Garry's Mod with FNAF dupes >_< (Ya mentioned fnaf, plus in the videos it was pointed out that Steam UI sounds can be heard, so naturally, had to ask :P )
