I believe the next renaissance will be soon. Lost World was a misstep and Boom was an outsourced fluke, but by all accounts Runners is great and the next Sonic Team entry should be announced in the next couple of months. I'm optimistic!

I would rather take a godawful Sonic game every year than not have the franchise at all. So long as there are Sonic games, we still have a chance of getting another quality renaissance, as in 2008-2011. Basically one Sonic Generations outweighs every bad game out there, for me.

I wouldn't.

If all SEGA did was release a game as bad as Sonic 06 each year, then I'd rather they never released a new Sonic game ever again.

I'd be more than happy if Sonic Team took 3 or 4 years to work on a new game, which is perfectly polished with excellent physics and consistently good stage design. To fill the 3 or 4 year void SEGA can release new Sonic mobiles games and re-release previous Sonic titles on PS4, Xbox1 & Steam. Not to mention the excellent all-stars racing games.

I still think they'll make console games for a long time. I just hope the new games are released on PS4, Xbox1 and Steam instead of being restricted to one platform.

Not saying people are saying this, but when is the last the last time that Sonic Team released a Sonic 06 type bad game? Its coming up almost a decade and that game is still being mention like it just came out last week (not here, just in general).

Granted it's not Sonic Team, RoL was just as bad as '06. For different reasons perhaps, but it was a colossal disaster of a Sonic game. '06 is just ripe for ripping on. And as good as Generations and Colours may have been, both had their obvious shortcomings and still weren't these truly amazing games. Put them alongside Unleashed, S4 and Lost World, which are very mixed bags at best, and it becomes obvious that the series is still stumbling along even if it's no longer being dragged through the gutter (until Boom happened).

Yeah, '06 is a cheap shot. It's gonna keep happening until the series can hit a stead good quality though. They came close, but didn't keep the momentum going.. And people are never going to forgot the "dark ages of Sonic", cause they lasted for such a long time.

Pretty much this. Even when a lot of people disagreed with design choices (Or the lack of them.) in many recent Sonic games, none of them were, on a technical level, poorly put together like 06 or Boom. (And Boom is getting patches, for some reason.) Lost Worlds runs like a dream, as much as the stages divide the community consensus on the game.

I guess Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric would be at least partially to blame for that. Even if it wasn't made by Sonic Team, it's given people online who don't actually play modern Sonic games the idea again that SEGA is incapable of putting out good Sonic games. And you don't need to look any further for proof than your local click bait supplier. Since Rise of Lyric came out The Verge, VICE, Metro, Daily Star, Cheat Sheet, and GamesRadar all put up "Sonic should die" articles. I guess Colours and Generations didn't make a big enough impact on people's impression of modern Sonic for them to consider that maybe Sonic Team can still make good games. Lost World's mixed reception didn't help either. So I don't really blame people who don't care about Sonic to think that the franchise is in shambles right now.

I don't really disagree with that Sonic should take a break either, or at the very least Sonic Team should take a break from making them. I'd really like to see them put out something new that isn't Sonic, like back when they put out stuff like Burning Rangers or NiGHTS. And if SEGA really wants to keep putting out Sonic games, I've seen a decent amount of indie devs say that they wouldn't mind making new games in the series. Maybe they wouldn't be big retail releases, but they'd probably be good or interesting at least. At the very least it's unlikely that they'd have another Rise of Lyric on their hands if they know how to pick a good developer that actually wants to make a Sonic game instead of a generic platformer with Sonic's name on it.

Sonic Team is a game studio, just like any other. I believe that they need a break every once in a while. The same studio behind such beloved games as Phantasy Star Online is now relegated to making Sonic and Puyo Puyo. That's it. I'd much rather have a Sonic game every 3-4 years with mobile games, rereleases, or updates a la Tax/Stealth style in between. Let Sonic Team focus on some original stuff! Let them get the non-Sonic ideas out of Sonic. We have enough Mario and Sonic, All-Stars Racing, Sonic Dash/Jump and other little things here and there that can satiate our want for Sonic while Sonic Team is focusing on a main title every 3-4 years.

...Also as a complete side note, it's nice to see you here, Donnie! I hear you as a commentator a lot on FTCR, BrainScratch, and those other Let's Play-type channels with an emphasis on Sonic. I hope you enjoy what you find here.

Personally I would rather a Sonic game come out next year considering the franchise turns 25 then. It would be kind of neat if a summer release would to occur too but it's been a long time since that happened. If we don't get the announcement of a new Sonic game by E3 then it looks like they are indeed holding off on a new game until 2016 in my opinion. It seems like Runners is helping bridge the gap even if just a little.

And thanks, Jared! =)

I like that idea. At one point they'd have tried all the bad ideas, and only the good ones would be left to do :eng101:

The core problem with Sonic games has always been project management and discipline. Instead of spending time refining the core Sonic formula to work in 3D, they add lots of silly ideas such as psychic hedgehogs and warehogs.
There's only so many hours in a day and the more 'new' ideas a game has, the less time there is to perfect the Sonic sections.

Some of these ideas are so divorced from Sonic that it creates the impression that the developers aren't interested in the brand and so are just using it as a vehicle to work on their own pet projects.

The reason why Colors and Generations were significantly better was because they didn't try to do too many things. For Generations, Iizuka even said that time was spent re-doing the levels so they would be just right.

With Lost World, the game felt very rushed. Part of the problem is that they doubled the number of level themes. So it's no wonder they didn't have time to refine the levels.

From a gameplay point of view, Sonic is all about the level design. But a lot of the modern games neglected this and instead focus on play styles.
