Top Speed is basically the second speed up, only no rings spawn. From there on, you need to play perfectly and not take a hit to keep going. This isn't a problem if you're used to third speed layouts and such, but the lag the game gets from time to time makes this part a pain in the ass because of how it handles lag. I've lost runs because it lagged right before I hit a dash a ring and teleports me past its vertically, or I'm about to hit a jump pad, it lags, and then I teleport in front of it with no ability to jump. Both usually end with a spike or missile to the ass or falling down a pit.
They REALLY need to optimize their game or have it not make so many http requests behind the scenes. If you don't know, the game makes about 100 HTTP requests to the ad server in the span of five minutes. This may be what's causing lagging issues in mid-runs because of how intensive Runners is already (and I suspect the game may be going over its RAM limit. I can't explain why some devices run extremely hot when the game's running, though my Nexus 7 gets extremely hot on the top/left side.)
Mind you, Sonic Team has usually been pretty garbage at optimization. Consider Tiddles' Sonic 3 Complete and how he saved a ton of space on the cart by removing redundancies and such.

So I run a rooted Nexus 4 and running adaway and forgot one of the major gripes was the ads. I have not seen one in-game ad whatsoever. Despite that, I still get a fuckton of lag. Though the Nexus 4 is an older device at this point (certainly not even close to being outdated), Runners is not enough to drive it into the ground hardware-wise. In fact, streamlined mode does not to fix these random lag spikes. If anything, this reinforces the point that those 100 HTTP requests, despite their not making a connection in my case, is a bit too much for the game alone to handle. I hope you're seeing this SEGA. This is simple stuff. Please optimize your game. You've actually got an original, fun concept on your hands here and, for the first time in a VERY long time, I want to see you succeed.

I don't know what to think of this game. It doesn't run so great on my phone, not to the point of unplayability, but, I notice it kind of chugs along and turns my phone into one of those hand warmers... I'm almost curious to try and see how it runs on my android tablet which is a little beefier than my phone, but this game doesn't seem like it's all that optimized. The only games that don't make my phone heat up are the Taxman Sonic 1 and 2 ports. I have CD on Steam. Almost every other game on android seems to turn your phone into a hand warmer. Even games that shouldn't use that much of your phone's CPU or otherwise seem to do that. I mean Bejeweled causes my phones to heat up like they're running Crisis on max settings. Freaking Bejeweled. However, Taxman's Sonic 1 and 2 ports (and likely CD, but I'm not thinking I want the mobile variant) all run without causing my phone to feel like I should start cooking an egg on the back of it.
Also I like how the options menu (which is probably just volume controls) is seemingly "locked" until you finish doing every single tutorial. I think I can figure out how your game works SEGA, I like to think that I'm not stupid, and tutorials in a level I'm fairly indifferent on. Tutorials that hold your hand showing you how to do everything in the app without allowing me to be interested in looking at the stuff I actually would like to look into? I don't think that's good design at all. Why even bother having the icons there if I can't interact with them?
FYI everyone, the birthday event ends tomorrow, and when it does, Classic Sonic, the Death Egg, and (I think?) the cartridge won't be unlockable anymore. Guess I know how I'm spending my time tonight.

Ruby misspoke on that. The in-game notification (click the newspaper) says July 3 is the last day of the Birthday Event level. Meaning get your last pushes in for cakes. Classic Sonic will stay on the roulette until July 10. The problem is that Omega is also coming live tomorrow, so now you not only have a 6% chance of getting a new character, you now have a 50% chance of that 6% to get Classic Sonic if that's the one you want. So... a 3% chance.
It doesn't look like the buddies are leaving as they seem to not have an expiration date on them, but the roulette may revert to its normal style of Normal eggs and rare eggs.

Always worth watching:
Thanks for clarifying, Gene. Sounds like it'd still be my best bet to try to WORK IT OUT WORK IT OUT tonight. I'd be so frustrated if it FINALLY landed on that freakin' egg and Omega popped out of it.
Come to think of it, if adults are having this much trouble and pain unlocking these characters, how hard must it be for the game's real target audience, children? Speaking from personal experiences at ages 6 through 9, I would have legitimately cried trying to get "The Pink Sonic", then deleted Runners, and went back to playing a game where's she's readily available.
Do they really think most kid fans have the patience of an adult MMO player to get what they want? If so, we live in a sad world where children waste precious time needed to develop important motor skills unlocking the most basic content that other games aren't stupid enough to dangle over your head like a juicy steak. The masochism Runners expects you to have is unreal to me, even Pokemon isn't that cruel with wild encounters. (Unless we're talking Feebas.)
The more I see of this thing, the more I disagree with its direction and intentionally hampered accessibility on multiple fronts.

I don't think kids give as much of a crap, to be honest. They'd more likely go, "This is dumb." and erase the game.
Classic sonic is still around for a week it's just the event itself that has finished, and yeah the companions are now only as good as they are until they (maybe?) do an event with them in again, so far there's not been a repeat since beta launch.
The iOS version had an update today and it's not completely removed the iphone 5 stutter but it's reduced it a fair bit, the game feels playable again but I need to try more then two runs to see if the stutter returns more.
*edit* nope fuck this game, I did a run and it was alright so I setup for a big score run, right at the start of the second area I lag as I jump, hit a drill enemy and fall into a pit and then the game keeps stuttering. This game has gone to shit and I hate it, the red ring earning speed is way too slow to bother with this game any longer, I'm out.
