SEGA Posts $18.5 Million Loss, Restructuring to Focus on Online Games.

Basically, SEGA has just released its financial report for the second quarter, and things aren't looking to great for the one time video game giant. - See more at: http://www.gamnesia....es#.VFaDe_msWSo

"Restructuring to Focus on Online Games that name doesn't have the initials 'PSO2". Anyway, it seems Sega is always losing money.

Dreamcast might not have killed the spirit of Sega, but I've a feeling moving to a more online focus will...

Great, another shit year for Sega. Just churn out 1 or 2 more good Sonic games before you go down the shitter or sell off the IP to a competent company in a liquidation sale and I'll be good to go.

This is like, what, the third time they said they are focusing on online games?

Whatever, if the move doesn't...

a. correspond to an increase in quality standards
b. correspond to an increase in games that make it overseas
c. correspond to an increase in the amount of ACTUAL FUCKING ADVERTISING they give their games

... then most people won't care and Sega will still continue to bleed out money (while continuing to shoot themselves in the foot some more as an attempt to make it stop). Just make sure to let TaxStealth's Sonic 3&K remaster see the light of day and publish all of the TaxStealth's classic Sonic remasters on consoles before you shuffle yourself off the mortal coil completely, and maybe then I wouldn't be convinced that you killed yourself out of spiteful ignorance rather than standard ignorance.

Is this primarily focused on the consumer divisions, or will the arcade divisions also be affected?

Hmm, I'm not surprised. SEGA is another company, much like Nintendo, who are far too happy resting on their business ideologies regardless of circumstance, rather than being a company that is ever evolving to suit the needs of it's consumers and itself.

Other than Sonic and the odd OutRun/MonkeyBall/CrazyTaxi port/variation and some random few publishing deals, I'm not actually really sure what SEGA actually do nowadays. There's little in common with what SEGA was 20 years ago, at the height of their fame, when the Mega Drive could get no better and the Saturn hadn't been released yet.

Nintendo just need to buy these guys out.

That's what hurts so much. It doesn't feel like internal Sega studios are even trying outside of Japan for non-Sonic games. Has the Western world essentially been written off to them?

There needs to be another Atari situation, this time with Sega.

I.e. The company should go under, and have another company buy the rights and rebrand themselves as Sega. Preferably a Western company that won't let some sort of mis-placed sense of pride and distaste of western markets get in the way of quality products.

While being sold to Nintendo would mean an uptick in quality of the products, I don't think they would be able to re-create the soul of the golden age. Other companies can hit a high level of quality as well as keeping it multi-platform.

I'm not even going to remark on their online-only approach, because it's going to fail fast and hard.

Shit son I'd just be happy to get that OutRun 3D Classic at this point, I do want more OutRun. EDIT: THANK YOU BASED-SEGA

I swear once SEGA started to look more towards the dollar signs and less on making unique arcade-styled gaming experiences circa 2005 we lost SEGA. The deal with Platinum Games was fantastic, aside from SEGA's marketing they fit together like a glove.

And how is that working out for them?

I'm going to assume that would be impossible since SEGA is a Japanese company.

I believe this loss is directed entirely at Sega's consumer division. Last I heard Sega's amusement division still pulled a profit, and SegaSammy as a whole isn't in financial dire straights, so it's unlikely we'll see Sega sold off to somebody who knows what to do with it.

So many Japanese game companies are losing money and going out of business. What even became of Capcom after they put themselves up for sale? I'm beginning to feel that this isn't strictly a Sega problem as much as it is a Japanese one.

It also doesn't make sense to me that Sega still refuses to localize so many of their games after purchasing Atlus, a translation company. What does Sega plan to do with them anyway? Unless Atlus is being re-purposed into Sega's translation department, I don't see the fruits of their purchase. I vaguely recall someone from Atlus saying that Sega has permitted them to bring back some of Sega's old IPs, but again, what became of that? Then there's the deal with the HD ports; did they really do so poorly that Sega won't bother to do anymore of them? NiGHTS and Jet Set Radio were already niche games back when they came out. What sales figures did Sega expect when they were re-released with little more than a release trailer? Then there's StealthTax Sonic 3 & Knuckles which is a whole other can of worms entirely.
