Replacing GameCube Controller Plug Cover?

A GameCube controller of mine is not in good shape mechanically, and I'd like to replace the board. The problem is the replacement board's cord housing (purple) is not the same color as the original (orange). Is it possible to remove the housing around the controller plugs to maintain the same color on the controller and plug? I couldn't find an obvious way to do it.
