After all these years playing Sonic 1, I never noticed that the air bubbles he exhales form into the drown count down digits.
Sonic is directly telling us that he will drown in that amount of time!

What is it about the drowning music that makes it sound more menacing on the Genesis than any of the orchestral versions? It sounds so bold and mechanical on the Genesis whereas the orchestral versions just don't pack the same punch. Maybe it's related to childhood trauma or something.

I'd say Sonic's first words were "yes" or "I'm outta here." I.e. his spoken dialogue in Sonic CD. Then again, I think he might've spoke in one of the Japanese ads or something.

That's a image I found when I was loooking through old gaming magazine scans. I felt pretty lucky to find it. You are right, it looks like the early development version of Sonic.
