Love seeing love for Mean Bean Machine, also. I'm not crazy about the AOSTH motif but it's still such an addicting game.

I had a Genesis with a Base Station, gotten after I graduated middle school (so, just into the 5th generation), and managed to get Sonic 1 and 2 from Sega-Parts.
I touched them rarely, though they were fun to play when I did. I got Meka to play them again, because I was just too lazy to find Genesis parts after we moved, and made runs to get all the Chaos Emeralds, just a couple of weeks ago.
Sonic 1 was unbelievably fun, and I think Jungle Zone and Bridge Zone were pretty ace levels. Labyrinth Zone, which was a pretty okay level on the Genesis game, gave me fits here.
Sonic 2... I remember never playing past Underground Zone when I was younger. Something deep inside of me told me that if this was the opening level, how much worse can the game get?
Then I was at the point of collecting the emerald in Emerald Hills Zone... yikes. Just yeah, that was maybe a little too difficult SEGA.
Off topic: We had a choice between the NES and the SMS when we were little. Now, later in my life, I wish we went with the SMS instead. Phantasy Star is one of my favorite RPGs, and the 8 Bit Sonic games, and I just like the Outrun port. Plus, I just love my MSX's.

You mentioned you might look into doing videos before you hit the Dreamcast and post-Dreamcast era. I dunno how time-consuming it would be, but a small retrospective on the hacking community would be pretty cool. There's a whole lot of history here and no one's seemed to have concisely told it before. It'd be cool if you'd be up for it, but again it sounds as if you've got some other plans so, whatever floats your boat, I'll still be watching. :P

You're welcome. =P (Also the name "Blast" was only used in North America, SoA needing to be special once again - US was the minority region, not Europe).

I enjoyed watching both these videos Josh, as always. It's been a great series and I'm looking forward to seeing your take on the Adventure games next year.
This isn't because of anything that you've done, but I couldn't watch the Sonic 3D sections properly - in recent years playing the game has started making me get motion sickness for some reason, to the point now that I can't even look at bits of footage without feeling nauseous (which I didn't realise until I watched this video) x_x The weird thing is, it was never an issue when I was younger, yet my mum's always had that problem with the game. Maybe we're just weird - or does anyone else have this problem? I'm just curious because I'm not normally prone to this kind of thing (well, I get travel sick on aeroplanes but that's about it, games aren't normally an issue).

Me too. I even refer to the Mega Drive as the Genesis now. Then again I believe the UK Saturn release was labelled Blast as well.
My eyes get a bit irritated by the MD games now too, the motion sickness not to mention, though get a bit odd when my character falls from a very high distance. I dunno if my eyes are failing me or just because I spend so much time straining them on the laptop and rarely sleeping.
As for the games, I pretty much agree with most of them, par maybe 3D Blast (yah see :P). The Flicky idea did get kinda tedious at times and it was obviously something that worked better on paper, but I thought it was fun for a while. Then again I enjoyed Labyrinth in dose, and that's rather similar in both concept and reception.
I'm all for the divergent retrospective ideas by the way (the aforementioned ones for unused ideas, cancelled games, fan works, etc). You're a very entertaining critic and I'd love to see more Sonic videos from you before Summer 2015.

The problem with No Flickies is that it shows how damn simple the levels are without that mission. They're more just hubs to collect the flickies in. I can maybe empathize with why they went that route since a standard platformer would likely take up tons of memory for plausibly sized dynamic levels for Sonic run around in, as Josh mentioned with Xtreme.
Granted Panic Puppet 2 was a pretty decent level without the flickies so who knows.
Add two people. Sonic R was imperfect, but I couldn't bash the gameplay itself much. It just needed some fine tuning, mostly in terms of character playability and the number of levels.

I can understand that a few of the zones were pretty simplistic, however, many of them seem pretty vast. The thing about Sonic 3D is that it seems that the flickies were added as a gimmick to encourage exploration. You could argue that it was gameplay filler, but I don't really think so. To be perfectly honest, I think the development team was just stuck on how to make the stages more interesting. However, the game holds up pretty well without flickies.

Also, searching for Sonic R images brought me back to this classic:

I remember some like Diamond Dust being pretty dynamic, if still a bit too small for Sonic to speed through normally.
Both Chaotix and 3D I suppose could be cool games if implemented with good level design and a varied enough number of gimmicks (even standard tropes such as a water level could have made all the difference in variety). It's a shame hacking is so limited with the spin offs, they seem the games most beneficial of a retooling.
Also I guess I stand corrected about the UK title. I'm certain I saw the Blast moniker somewhere before though. Preview images using the US box perhaps.

You guys must have missed the thread about a theoretical sequel. Plenty of love for it there -
