I was recently browsing http://www.aliexpress.com/ and came across many Hacks from Sonic Retro on repro carts, I know some of the Hack's here are really awesome and members might like to play them on real hardware and so here's a list I found. (These aren't my doing, Only thought I'd share incase you were into this.)

Sonic Crackers Repro cart:
http://www.aliexpres...1356524498.html

Sonic Jam 6 Repro cart:
http://www.aliexpres...1356524417.html

Sonic Christmas - Not sure of the original name but I know it was something else:
http://www.aliexpres...1356431244.html

Sonic red - Not sure what this is:
http://www.aliexpres...1356314070.html

Sonic Legend - Again not sure of this:
http://www.aliexpres...1356524656.html

Metal Sonic HyperDrive by Lone Devil:
http://www.aliexpres...1970642023.html

Sonic 2 Retro Remix:
http://www.aliexpres...1970648853.html

Sonic The Hedgehog - The Lost Worlds:
http://www.aliexpres...1970652066.html

S-Factor - Sonia & Silver (I believe this is made by a Moderator here?):
http://www.aliexpres...1970641100.html

Again these are nothing to do with me but I thought it cool to share as some of these hacks are pretty good. :)

I'm not sure what people would think of this. It's cool that the hacks are being appreciated, but I'm not sure how people would feel about the hacks being sold without the creators permissions, especially since someone else is earning money off of it, and not giving anything (not even credit) to the original hackers.

There's not even Sonic 3 Complete or Sonic Classic Heroes, which are the only hacks that can really hold my attention. Not like I'd ever pay money for a repro of a romhack anyway. It'd be cool as hell if SEGA struck up licensing deals with hackers to legally sell romhacks, so that both the hacker and SEGA could make a share of profits. But this? All the money is going to someone whose greatest accomplishment is stealing other people's work.

What about a lovingly crafted repro, complete with a manual and everything?

I know some people might be upset, That's the issue when it comes to pirated games. There isn't much you can really do, I can also agree on the money side of it.

It's pretty limited I know, But this is what I found with a quick search, I think these might have been up for sale for a long while as most hacks are pretty old now. I doubt SEGA would ever do this unless they got 95% of the profit's or more since they'll claim copyright over the hacks.

This is why I shared it here, I know some members would like this sort of thing and these repro's are cheaper then most I have around on sites such as eBay, But who really wants to buy Angry Birds for the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis in Russian? Lol.

This. Just get one of those instead of paying people who are profiting from the work of others without permission if you really want to play hacks on your actual Mega Drive/Genesis.

Nah, sorry. There's a certain novelty in owning a repro of a hack you really like. I wouldn't purchase one from one of these folks, but I'd certainly pay someone directly to make me own. Or make it myself.

well don't ignore the fact that making a repro cart is work itself, it's not like selling rom downloads of robotnik's revenge or whatever

I'm confused, are you justifying their work?

When you put something on the internet, it becomes public domain. Curtosy is nice, but you can't enforce it, and the very existence of freely available ROM hacks probably wouldn't hold up well in a court of law.

And I can't imagine Sonic Megamix has led to many mansions or fast cars.

Enforceable? Not necessarily without going to court. However, I somehow doubt that merely posting one's work on the internet legally disqualifies you of any ownership, at least as long as it's your own work and not derivative of someone else's actively protected IP. Of course, I'm not a lawyer and doubt that you are either, but I really don't think that's how the law works.

I don't know much about law, but I don't think that's how it works... Anyway, I was never arguing that this could be taken to court, as it can't for other reasons like SEGA's work being used. Selling other people's stuff without permission is just a shitty thing to do.

I wasn't referring to the legal definition of public domain, but rather, anyone has access to it can can pretty much do as they please without reprocussions. You can't put out a ROM hack and expect everyone to give you credit for its existence - people will steal things and there's not much you can do about it. It's the risk you take.

I mean... We all know ROM hacking is in this gray area all to its own. The fact companies haven't put the hammer to us more often than usual is surprising. Like what Black Squirrel's been saying, there's no means to enforce and protect hours of work that ultimately is content based on properties other than your own creation. I think the only game that could get away with it would be Sonic Megamix, due to the fact that its undergone so much editing that it hardly even resembles the code it was originally based on, but that would need heavy graphical editing alone just to get rid of the Sonic references.
