The Master System version of Triple Trouble is actually a hack done by a member here. I think his name was Glitch.

I wonder if work on it will continue.

By the way, does someone knows how to make it work on real hardware? I've failed two times already (I get a "software error")

A shame TecToy never had a go at it.

I agree most of the games feel better on the Master System due to the more wide open resolution. The only downside was some of the downgrades such as color limitations and bad attempts at high res artwork (Sonic Chaos is hit and miss with this, though I like MS Gigalopolis theme and the larger boss hit counts).

You forgot about the hidden BGM in Sonic 2 8-bit as well. I put it in my hack, but it was sitting there unused in the original code. Maybe a special stage tune?

ehhhh. You say that, but as someone whose favourite Game Gear Sonic is Sonic Chaos, I thought 2 was a waste of money (£12 is a lot when your age is in single digits). Didn't help how notoriously hard Underground Zone is on Game Gear - to this day I've not beaten that version's boss (have on Master System).

I'm not saying Chaos is a bad game or anything, but I did feel ripped off over how easy it was. After the super-tease of 2, it was only natural that I'd pick Tails for my first run. He couldn't enter special stages, but the levels were really easy to explore with flight, so it was over quickly. Then I picked Sonic and just stormed through scenery I was already familiar with. The hardest part of that game was memorizing the special stages and that's only beacuse of the time limit and limited access to tries. So don't get me wrong, I still find the game fun to play, just not nearly as satisfying as 2.

Triple Trouble was better, but good God are Sonic's sprite and the first level hideous. It makes up for it by some great level design though (those railroad, jungle, water and final levels are amazing).

Sonic Chaos was far too easy, but I've always loved it regardless (I got the Master System version, with the Master System console itself, for Christmas many years ago - and I'd completed the game by Boxing Day). Triple Trouble is much better though, definitely one of the best of the 8 bit Sonic games.

As for Sonic 2? I got the Master System version as a kid and never completed it. It's like the opposite of Sonic Chaos in that it's too difficult and I didn't like it when I was younger for that reason. I don't mind it now, but at times it still feels extremely cheap. I did actually managed to complete the Game Gear version legitimately for the first time a couple of years ago, with all the Chaos Emeralds (and no savestates or cheats) - it'll probably be the first and the only time I'll ever do it though, it was pretty crazy =P It feels really good to have finally conquered the game though, I've gotta say.

It's a bit of a weird game generally, as others have said. Aside from the difficulty level, one of the things that always bugged me was that Tails wasn't playable. Judging by the fact that he's basically got all the sprites he'd need, I'd guess at one time he was playable - or, at least, that was the plan. I have to wonder why the developers never followed through with that.

I always thought it fit a menu better, which is why I added it to the level select in my Sonic 2 hack. :v:/> It's an okay tune, just not as great as the rest of the game's soundtrack.

Chaos is one of the games I'd like to see a level hack for, simply because it could potentially utilize the decency of everything else of the game with good level structure and make a pretty fun game.

Also all this talk about Sonic Chaos is really making me want to do more work on my disassembly. If I remember correctly I was in the process of splitting up level layouts last time I worked on it. I just have to find the time to do so. However Sonic Chaos is my favorite 8-bit game. It feels more like the 16-bit games than Sonic 2, probably because there are special stages and the spin dash is present. Not to mention that Tails is playable too. xD Also I enjoy the SMS version but not the GG version. I still have yet to finish Underground Zone. >_<

Incidentally, do you happen to have the 3d glasses adapter attached? Try unplugging it.

The checksum is incorrect in the version of the ROM that's floating about. If your SMS BIOS checks the value it will fail to boot.

There is an unused BGM in Sonic 2 8-bits?! Wow!! I never heard about this, and it's my favourite game EVER! Where can I find more info about it, or a full MP3/youtube video to hear it? In that video it's too short.
I wonder why is this game so left behind, with all the secrets and weirdness it has. I feel there has to be so much hidden there, like when that Marble Zone BGM was found on Sonic 1 8bits. I wish there was more investigation on this game ( and wish I knew how to explore the code...I have no tech knowledge)

smspower has complete rips of both the GG and SMS soundtracks, including that hidden track -- and the speed shoes song which only shows up in act 2 of aqua lake on the SMS version. Worth checking out.

I decided to try the SMS version for the first time in quite a while. I died a lot more than I remembered, and I blame the TV I was playing on since it seemed like it introduced a bunch of lag. Died in a number of places I don't generally while playing the game.

But I learned something from a few deaths on Green Hills 3 -- not only is it harder on the game gear version because of the fact that the screen space is too limited to see where anything is in the second half of the stage, the layout in the first half is made more complex! There are a bunch more spikes that you have to jump across near the end in order to get to the second half, so you can't just hold right from the first spring and be almost all of the way there. You have to jump on a bunch of springs in order to make it back. The fact that the background is the same layer as the foreground makes lining these up feasible, but it's definitely more work than you have to put into the SMS version. I'd love to see someone rip the SMS layouts for comparison because the one on the wiki is of the GG version.

Jan's point about the rolling-into-springs making you go higher made the game make a hell of a lot more sense, though. Before that I had no fucking clue why I could make it through GHZ3 some times and others I'd fail completely.

Got a video up (or will be up later if you're seeing this just as I posted it) showing a little of the difference:

Wait, why was the tune different in your video?

One of the SMS/GG differences.

I prefer the SMS' boss music. No real reason other than it just sounds better.

And I definitely prefer the Game Gear version's. It's a lot less traditional as a boss theme and I agree that the sound mixing isn't so rough on the Master System's version, but eh.

I actually looked up the Master System Sonic games on eBay the other day, and they're pretty expensive.
