Who: Yu Suzuki | President, Ys Net (with PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny translating)
When: 2:00PM-3:00PM (12:30-2pm set up)
What: Yu Suzuki will talk for the very first time about the creation of the console classic, Shenmue. Beginning with the origin of the title as a Virtua Fighter-based RPG on the Sega Saturn, he will take the audience through the long journey of the game that led to its ultimate release in 1999 on the Sega Dreamcast. (via the GDC website)
Figures it takes place while I'm at work. -_- Will be interesting to see how it goes. I'm certain a lot of people are hoping for an HD remake announcement but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
In short:
He talked about a prototype about an old man and a pear tree that was created before hand. Then it became Akira RPG. Then it became Shenmue when they decided it should launch on Dreamcast and not be limited to the Virtua Fighter franchise. The most interesting part I think was that the original story was broken up into 11 chapters and there was a concept sketch for each one. (Shown during the presentation). A few of those concepts resemble things we know from Shenmue 1&2, like one with Ryo and Ren and the Phoenix mirror. But there are some others that show things which could only be speculated at this one. One looked like it could be Ryo with a group of people from Bailu village. The presentation only lasted about 38 minutes, and he stops before Shenmue 2. Overall, I don't think anything too significant was revealed.
I did find it interesting to know that a lot of the areas were procedurally generated. I kind of assumed that maybe the buildings in Kowloon had furniture layouts stored somewhere, but it sounds like those are actually calculated at runtime.
This has been floating around recently, and I figured I'd post it here in case anyone interested hasn't seen it yet. While it's completely unfeasible for him to do this for the entire game, I hope he releases whatever he decides to do someday.
