:O Mind = Blown
I always thought this was a punishment if you stayed on the platform too long or mistimed a jump (as overlord said) but I thought it was simply get up on the top ledge, or take the water path ... Didn't realise it was a raft.
Wow. I love how these games still throw things at some of us after so long.

I knew about the one in Aquatic Ruins Zone. But you guys just blew my mind with Oil Ocean Zone. I had never seen that one.

Yeah I knew about this myself and I discovered it by mistake one day. xD I never take that path though, I always jump off the platform myself.

Never knew about it because I never messed up the timing of that platform.
And you get the 50 rings necessary to turn into Super sonic before those platforms how?

Yea I knew about this. Never cared because I never ever go that way. I have Super Sonic by then, so I go zooming across the top of the stage.

Never knew about this before the thread. As others were, I was under the impression that there was only the upper and lower path in the intro of act 2, not a middle one as well. Seems that perhaps the developers thought of level gimmicks first, and designed layouts around them afterward.
I can definitely see this being a neat piece of concept art that they thought would make the level more interesting to navigate, but when it came time to draw up the actual maps, it just didn't end up being used much. They at least went as far as to implement it, even if only once, unlike entirely cut concepts like buzz-bomber type enemies burning bridges down.

Yeah, I'm one of those clueless guys who didn't know about it either. But mainly because I haven't played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that much.

Well fuck me....
I always jumped. Seeing tails jump off in the demo always kept me away from that area unless seeing someone else land down there by accident.
Creative detail. We'll never get it back.

I found this when I was a kid by staying on that second swinging platform while I looked at the Sonic 1 and 2 guide. I would frequently look down at the guide as I learned the level layouts and just have sonic stand still with the game unpaused. Looked down at the guide, then when I looked back up, I was floating on the water. Pretty neat stuff.
