* Retro Gamer has been going far longer
* Is a much better magazine
* Has better writing staff

Not too hard to grasp.

But it's 50 dollars more for a subscription in the US.

Over 12 issues, that's just over 4 bucks per issue more for a much better magazine that's got proven staying power, as well as what I already said. I don't think Retro Gamer has anything to worry about.

Price isn't really a worry at all because Retro Gamer puts out way more content than Retro. Here's how they stack up:

Retro Gamer: 13 issues per year, each at 116 pages (annual total of 1508 pages). £51.90 ($86.97) annual domestic subscription.
Retro: 6 issues per year, each at 68 pages (annual total of 408 pages). $32.99 (£19.69) annual domestic subscription.

So yeah, a sub to Retro Gamer costs is 2.64 times the cost of a sub to Retro, but you get 3.7 times the content in terms of page count. I've not got my PDF of Retro to hand so I can't tell you what proportion of that publication is editorial content, but I can tell you that Retro Gamer's editorial content total is usually 100+ pages per issue.

At any rate, Retro Gamer is a profitable magazine with a healthy, stable readership, a very strong content offering and a decade of reputation behind it. Besides, there are a number of reasons to believe that Retro is the publication with a far more questionable future.

If you do go down the Sakura Taisen route, don't forget to mention that the subtitle of the third one, "Sakura Taisen 3: Paris wa Moeteiru ka", when translated literally becomes "Sakura Wars 3: is Paris burning?".

"is Paris burning?" is a quote by Hitler following the invasion of France in World War II. You don't get many games which quote Hitler

It's easy to be profitable when you charge almost 100 bucks for a subscription. It just prints money.

How about an article on arcade game collecting? The Naomi, Atomiswave, and Titan lend themselves well to this past-time, as well as the venerable Neo Geo MVS and the Capcom CPS-2

Also, I'd be interested in makings of Lucky Dime Caper and Cosmic Smash (was Cosmic Smash done before, pretty sure LDC hasn't been).

Issue 127 goes to press this week and features a very large feature on the history of arcade gaming. We've got a collector of Nintendo cabinets, but I don't think we've done anything on collecting for specific boards just yet. There's evidently some scope for it and a little demand, since we had a request for the IGS PGM boards too. I'll pitch it, though it'll likely be kicked back to later in the year.

As for Lucky Dime Caper, I'm making a pitch for 129 which might well include that - we'll see where it goes.

The subscription price is standard for a magazine with Retro Gamer's frequency and cover price. I doubt that this matters to you, since you're obviously done with sensible questions and have resorted to slinging mud. I'd appreciate it if we could keep things on topic.

A "Dreamcast 2" article covering the Atomiswave, Naomi and the various games that were developed for Dreamcast but ended up on Xbox, PS2 and GCN would be something I wouldn't mind reading about.

Back on the note of 20th Anniversaries like the 32X, if there's any year to cover Sega Pico and Sega Channel, it's this year.

Do you think you can get anything at all involving either of those?

The Sega Channel alone might not gain a lot of traction, but would be great as part of a wider "history of downloadable games" feature. This would covers the likes of the Intellivision PlayCable, right through to the original pre-360 Xbox Live Arcade service. It's an interesting technology feature, provided we can get access!

Hey guys, we've got two Sega-related features in the works.

The History of Crazy Taxi: We're interviewing series producer Kenji Kanno in London on 2nd May! Questions sought for every game in the Crazy Taxi series.

Bluffer's Guide to FMV Games: Tom Zito, producer of the many Digital Pictures FMV games which appeared on the Mega-CD, has agreed to a phone interview on 12th May. Questions on Digital Pictures games and FMV games in general sought.

One of the few people involved with 32X-CD software, some perspectives on that would be nice, whether it offered anything other than more colours for the grainy fmv. Did he hear of any other 32X-CD project?
