Retro video games as a whole are absurdly expensive nowadays. Saturn, Sega CD and SNES have been hit especially bad with it, from what I can tell. I mean, they all have their also-rans that generally go for peanuts, but then you have your Panzer Dragoon Sagas, your Snatchers and your Wild Guns that go for ludicrous prices.

I reckon it'll go down again once Saturn emulation becomes more... stable... and widespread... and easy. I mean there are Mega Drive games which are just as uncommon but from what I recall, there aren't that many Radient Silvergun-level cases for that platform.

I mean something like Panzer Dragoon Saga is a pain to emulate, compared to say, Super Mario Bros. which you can instantly play in your browser

I can think of a few: M.U.S.H.A., Crusader of Centy, Panorama Cotton, etc.

Hell, SNES and Sega CD have always been just about as easy to emulate, and yet prices for games like Wild Guns, Earthbound, Demon's Crest, Mega Man VII, X2 and X3, anything Squaresoft-related, Snatcher, Shining Force CD, Earthworm Jim: Special Edition, or anything Working Designs-related are quite high.

It just seems to me that if I bothered to learn japanese, I could save a fuckton of money.

Well, there's this thing I like to do where I burn the english localisation to CD-R, or buy the english disc loose, and then buy the cheap japanese version for the packaging and then replace the often cracked jewel case with a new double CD case and then voila, instant cheap retro game, often with superior cover art.

okay one or two, but there are more high profile cases on the Saturn - Radiant Silvergun, Shining Force III, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Guardian Heroes - localised versions of Capcom or SNK 2D fighters sell for too much too. A good chunk of the top-tier library is outside the normal price range, and this is despite some of them being readily available on other platforms.

actually I seem to recall Saturn games on the whole being too expensive when bought online. The best way back in the day was to pop into a branch of GameStation and pick up whatever they were selling for less than £3 (buy one get one free offers were all the rage too), regardless of brand, regardless of genre.

That element of "randomness" is lost online, and with something like the Saturn, where the system was deprived of games because it didn't sell, it ends up being a really nice way to experience the platform. It's how I met games like Alien Trilogy - I only bought it because it was there, and it turns out to be a pretty good game. You'll never find Dragon Force, but for 25p, FIFA 96 has to be good value for money (yes I did see it priced that low once)

A lot of Saturn titles are like that, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force can be both found dirt cheap in japan but cost triple figures in usa and eu.
