I have a hard time believing they'd reinvent Sonic mechanics on this scale for one game. Even Secret Rings got a sequel (Black Knight is more or less the same control style, at least). I'm not really sure what 2014 has in store for Sonic, but I doubt it's a platforming title, let alone a main series game. Sumo seems to be content with Transformed one PC for the time being, so I don't think they are involved. I think Sonic may not even get a non-mobile game in 2014, to be honest.
Yes, Secret Rings did get a sequel... about 2 or 3 years later. I'm not saying this game is a one off, I'm saying that this isn't the Sega of the early 90s or even the early 2000s anymore. We don't get direct sequels one year later. Sega has likely made a plan for how to go about Sonic console releases, since Sonic is basically the only console game to see the light of day in the West from Sega, that involves a yearly release. A 3 team, 3 year development cycle would make sense, as it would give them a game a year with enough time to develop each one. Sega entered this 3 game deal with Nintendo and we already have 2 of them. There is a 2014 Sonic, although we don't know what that is yet. But given that Lost World just came out I highly doubt it's even a spiritual sequel to that game. Hell Lost World is basically a sequel to Colors, and that came out 3 years ago. Same goes for Racing Transformed, it's prequel was also 3 years before. 2014 will be 3 years after Generations. I think we'll either get a sequel similar to that game, or something completely different.
