NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series or higher

And this is why I'm not particularly interested in UE4 at this point. Sure, I have higher specs than that (GTX 660Ti), but a lot of people have older cards than that. My brother-in-law's got a GTS 250, which is still perfectly serviceable at low-mid settings in the vast majority of games. I get that older cards and chipsets can't be supported forever, but it does seem a little soon to be completely locking them out.

With technology rapidly advancing, you have to realize when your stuff has become obsolete. If you want games that look good and fit with the modern era of gaming, you'll have to upgrade. I don't think developers should hinder their initial design ideas to cater to those who can't run 'em. That's what consoles are for.

If GDK or another Sonic codebase was made for UE4, it would be great. But lets face it - there aren't that many GDK projects, and I'm not aware of any that really push UE3 to it's limits. What we have available now is more than capable, and we don't even know when, or if, UE4 will be free to use.

Would you guys be fine if a 3D Sonic fan game was made that required as a minimum a $80 GPU from 2012? A game that would run fine even if your CPU was a pre-core 2 duo and you had only 1-2GB RAM ? All that on Windows XP and higher.

Just letting you know, Unreal Engine 4 starting from a few days ago has actually become publicly available. The only issue is that it is $19 a month just to license it! But things get tricky with Unreal Engine 4, a friend of mine purchased it and I had a go at it. When you buy a license they give you permission to access their GitHub page where you can download the Unreal Engine 4 Source Code. This is the editor by the way, except what makes it to be honest, completely unnecessary is that when you download it, you must also have Visual Studio 2013 just to compile the editor, basically making it into a .exe program. Another small issue as well, is that it comes with no content in it what-so-ever. So you'll have to model and make everything completely by scratch. And their is also no point on moving UDK projects to Unreal Engine 4 as UE4 doesn't support UnrealScript anymore, meaning that you would have to rescript your entire game, and I don't think you can use UDK packages within UE4 either. And in the end, some Unreal Engine 3 games are still pushing the limits of hardware. So don't bother with Unreal Engine 4 unless you have the time.

you don't need the source code , its optional, you can also cancel anytime and still keep the engine. ( you just wont get updates) read previous page in this thread. I've already bought the subscription plan, its the same price as having Netflix lol.
Anyways digging around inside the engine, its got a lot of nice features, you get a way better Kismet type interface this time around, you can even create player pawns without coding.

If I understand the changes they've made to UDK, Sonic GDK would effectively have to be rewritten. Not worth the time, honestly.
This, and the fact that very few people are using SGDK.

Haha what? UE4 doesn't even support UnrealScript? Does it have a scripting language at all?

edit: I answered my own question. C++ only. Marvelous.

Fuck C++ and it's complications!

There are other engines out there that have both scripting capabilities and allow you to dig in with just C++ too. UE4 isn't going to be one of them. That's a shame.

I don't really have a stake in this, because I don't even like UDK as it is and thought unrealscript was ugly as sin. But I can't exactly support a dev making their engine less accessible for people to use.

I feel like game creation is a constant battle of accessibility vs. power

UE4 will give you more power to do what you want, at the cost of being more difficult to use. I don't entirely blame them; I'm sure this is what professional game devs have had to do for years, it just now applies to everyone.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but professional devs have ALWAYS had access to the source code, haven't they? I don't understand why unrealscript had to to be removed in favor of an all C++ interface, when professional devs could already do that. By all means, make the C++ interface more streamlined and easier to use, but I don't know why that had to be at the expense of accessibility for everyone else.

The decision probably came down to

"Do we want to spend all this time developing/re-implementing Unreal script, or do we just let people input raw source code and the problem solves itself?"

Like, I get you. It sucks. If MMF3 started asking for real code I'd probably riot in the streets, but long term, and on a broader scope, this is undoubtedly better.

"professional devs" use Unreal Engine 3 for their games. GDK uses "UDK" which is basically a stripped down version of UE3. If you need a point of comparison UE3 is to UDK what MMF is to TGF.

Also, to the other dudes asking for UE4:
Xak already expressed his feelings about moving to UE4 and besides you guys can't even model last-gen resources or even edit SGDK properly as it is to better suit your game's needs, why the fuck do you need a next gen engine? To have more polys in your terrain tool? To build levels entirely of the assets that already comes with the engine?

Not trying to be a cunt here, I'm not the greatest modeler and I barely know how to program myself, but fuck me, we had SGDK for almost 4 years already and I can count on my fingers the projects where people actually took their time to learn the engine or even tried to make something half-decent. In my opinion, if you can't barely work with UDK, why the fuck are you guys wanting to go UE4? Just to give Xak more trouble of making an engine that you can't use properly? Do you really think everything just got easier? No. Perhaps a thing or two, but in essence, it's the same shit with a bunch of cool new stuff that UE3 couldn't handle (and you guys probably won't be able to use in the first place because y'all just too busy using the terrain tool).

tl;dr = Terrain Tool is gay and you should feel dirty for using it as much as you do.

Oh, I know it's better in the long run. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

It's just as you said. If MMF3 turned came around and started requiring raw code, I'd just write it off. Better as it might be for it, I can't support it. Raising the barrier of entry higher for amateurs to make games, however simple, is something I can't ever get fully behind. Other big-name engines out there take steps to make them easier to use. UE4 went in the opposite direction.

@P3DR0: I don't even use SGDK. Or even UDK for that matter. I'm guessing the majority of that post wasn't directed at me then?
