Get linux. You can run most of them from a usb stick now without having to install to hard drive if you don't feel like commiting to a hard drive install. If you can't get anywhere with windows, it could be worth a shot.

Alright, I'll definately consider it if I can't get anywhere with windows. what do you reccommend for a beginner of Linux?

Mint: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

If you don't know which one you need, you want 32bit Cinnamon. I recommend the xfce one if you have an older (and therefore slower) PC. To turn the ISO you download into a bootable-from-a-USB-stick form, you'll also need http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ .

what overlord said, although knoppix should be noted for being specifically optimised for running from a usb.

Also, I'm getting my technophobe mum on to linux via Lubuntu, since LXDE is similar in appearance to the old Win95 set-up and is beautifully functional in its simplicity.

Are these errors popping up the moment you try to run them? Just test ran them myself (albeit without plugging anything in) and they seemed fine. SharePod even leaves a log file behind so you could consult that and see if it's anything like missing DLLs that need to be installed or whatever.

Yeah they get these error the second I start them up with the ipod attached.

The I/O tests and Memory tests "press menu".

If you have a firewire cable you can auto test by pressing rew, otherwise manual test by pressing menu.

I/O:
~Comms:
-USBTest - ID=0x22FA05
-FirewireTest - No Connection (I have the firewire cord attached to the PC)

~Wheel:
-KeyTest - passed
-WheelTest - "WHEEL PASS"
-HoldkeyTest - "HOLD KEY - OK"

~LCD:
-OffsetTest - "WR COUNT OK"
-Backlight - passed

~HeadphoneDetect:
-can't test, asking for "remote".

~HardDrive:
-HDSNO - Serial Number: B4TWSTSA
-HDScan - rebooted the first time I scanned, second time I scanned it says "Fail!"

~Audio:
-Lineout - passed? can't tell for sure it made a noise.
-Speaker - unknown, no options come up or anything.

Memory:
~SDRam - SDRamFulltest - "SDRAM OK"
~Flash - "Checksum=0xB207"
~

Your Hard Drive failed a scan? No wonder why you're having problems. LOL. Umm. Doesn't matter if it's solid state or an old fashion mechinical one, they fail eventually (mechinical ones usually fail the quickiest in a portable device). It usaully very difficult to pull files off a Hard Drive that's starting to fail. iPod ones are usually subject to a lot of mechinical shock and it takes it's toll eventually although they are built to withstand a lot of it, those tiny drives start clicking and need to be tapped just to get an extra amount of life, but that can damage it too. As for the solid state flash models, everytime you listen to a song or skip a song or change the volume it's usually another write-cycle somewhere on there and that can take it's toll, especially if you're changing the contents too much (too much syncing) (though you have to one hell of a heavy user and don't think you still have working battery as the flash models should outlive several batteries under repeated heavy use), it be more board flexing that would damage it. The other thing is maybe the partition is corrupt.

Depends on how important the contents are and if you have fairly recent back ups on another mediam you can use those instead. It's always easier and far cheaper to restore from a recent and complete back-up somewhere else than attemp recovery from a failing storage device that doesn't want to deliver the goods.

Also if there's purchased music files from the iTunes store, Apple will you let re-download from their store after authorizing your current machine, once every year you can unauthorize all machines, if you run out via their online store as long as your account is still valid (I.e. you didn't close it or something else) or forgot all your login information. It's free to re-download from their store. Under quick links on the store front page, you should see purchased.

You will not be able to get every last song off there, but if your patient and skip anything that refuses to copy you can pull some of the contents. One directory at time, if you get an error skip that file. If you got any bad sectors this will work, if it's always a different file, it means you're out of luck.
