This is interesting. Sega Australia had pitched a series of remakes called "Sega Reborn" with games like Golden Axe, Shinobi, Streets of Rage and Altered Beast. The twist is that these games would all have been set in a single universe. This is the pitch video (made in Unity) for the Golden Axe remake:

According to the article it was never picked up because, as can be expected, there were various roadblocks between the studio and Sega of Japan. This does show what could be the reason why Sega Australia was picked to make the Castle of Illusion remake (which will be released next week) though.

I hope that remake never happens because it's completely missing the charm of the original. I seriously wish sometimes that I was in some part involved in developing games because I honestly think I could do a great Golden Axe game that would respect the originals.

Tying all of of Sega's human-based arcade games into a single universe is an intriguing idea. Mr. X was totally supplying the Hang-On bike rider with illegal NOS installs. I really wish this went somewhere.

I wrote too fast and posted without checking what words I missed out. What I meant to say is that I hope that a remake like that never happens because it's completely missing the charm of the original.

This was pretty early in development, think like a proof of concept. There's no telling whether things like "charm of the original" could have been worked in with more development time.

Personally I think it looks good all things considered and find it sad that we can't get cool things like this but got things like Beast Rider instead.

I do wish people would stop trying to "reinvent" Golden Axe. If it goes down the realistic route, as already pointed out it loses all its original charm and personality. If it sticks too close to the original formula people will notice that much of the gameplay is extremely dated and tedious. Same applies to Altered Beast, and I don't think the world is crying out for yet another reimagining of Shinobi. Also I get the feeling that unless you reunite the developers of twenty five years ago you're probably going to struggle to capture the same feeling as the originals (although coincidentally that's what's happened to some degree with Castle of Illusion).

Streets of Rage is probably the only game of the four that could conceivably come back, but all the attempts at Streets of Rage 4 I've seen have tried to "modernise" things or make life needlessly dark and grim. I'm happy to just say this was the spiritual successor and leave it at that

Putting all Sega games to share a universe is an interesting idea; even if not always feasible (some of them have so different settings that you could only make them share a universe through some very surreal means).

However you could do things like, the bikers from Streets of Rage being contestants in Super Hang-on, and such. It's a good idea, and as long as they could back them up with good games, it would be really interesting.

Die Hard Arcade was so terrible that I cannot even begin to say.
If anything, I'd pick Oni or God Hand, even if they played pretty differently for the most part. Maybe Fighting Force too, even though it was ass compared to Streets of Rage 2.

So go and write up a game design paper on a modern Streets of Rage implementation. Then you can talk big on how you could make a better game.

As someone who has never played those four games, I'd can't judge if combining their universes would've been a good or bad idea. However, it certainly would have been a unique way to handle those older properties. Plus after playing ASRT, I can't help but feel like a lot of Sega older properties have potential to have successful newer games if the right people were behind them. Considering how the Castle of Illusion remake looks very nice, it's possible this team could have pulled it off well but the prototype does not look fun to me at all. A finished product could've given us something great, but the video makes me glad they focused their efforts on Castle of Illusion's HD version instead.
