It looks like the Genesis (at least the model 1) has a 4 channel Texas Instruments PSG chip, I'm pretty sure this is for backwards compatibility with the Master System.

Since it's on the board, would it be possible to write up some code to use it in conjunction with the YM2612 simultaneously/switch between the two? Or is it only available for Master System ROMs?

This may or may not be an old question, but I didn't find anything on the forums personally.

I'm no expert, but I know the TI and Yamaha chips are used in conjunction for music. (Scroll down a bit, and you'll find what I'm talking about.)

Yes, in fact I highly doubt there are any licensed games that do not use both at the same time. The PSG is part of the VDP and is accessed through there (address offset $11), so addresses $C00011 on the 68000 side and 7F11h on the Z80 side.

No game with music by Matt Furniss has PSG used, because according to him the driver never got support for it.

Lots of games don't use it at all from what I can tell. One of the most notable examples to me is Sparkster, which following on the heels of Rocket Knight Adventures felt sort of out of place. Then again it and Castlevania: Bloodlines did use a different driver from the other games, and Michiru Yamane never seemed to rely on the chip ever.
