Emulating a YM properly requires quite a few hundred MHz of power for high level code, improper emulation can get away with much less. It is no way faster than playing even stuff like MP3 or OGG and things like ADPCM almost don't take CPU power to play.

Okay, so earlier on I had reported some odd sprite flickering and now I see it's a problem that affects many more places than I thought.

The problem seems to be that, whenever there's too many sprites on screen, there's a big chance that they'll eventually disappear (all at once) for a couple of frames. This has happened to me so far in:

-Special Stage
-Final Zone, when destroying the boss
-Marble Zone, when the lava lifts the block you're riding
-Labyrinth Zone 2, at that place with all the platforms-on-ropes (near the end)
-Somewhere else in Labyrinth, after getting an invincibility monitor
-Labyrinth 3, making the three last corks float up and down

Not a game breaker, but certainly annoying. In any case, this and the harmless spindash charge deserve a patch (hopefully with the option of turning off that darn TV curvature).

EDIT: Just found a bug in the Labyrinth boss, by the way. As soon as Robotnik appears on screen, go left. Now the water won't rise until you're at the very top.

I purchased this and Streets of Rage 3D recently. I know some have pointed out minor issues with the game, but in all honesty, to me these are the best ports of either game that I have seen. These are as close to the real deal as possible in my opinion and the 3D effect is really impressive, especially for Streets of Rage. The games look crystal clear too. The sound is great and I love being able to run the sound from a Model 1 Genesis with the volume slider at 8, just the way I like my Genesis to sound.

Make sure you have your 3DS hooked into speakers or headphones before judging the sound quality. It might be a lower Hz than the Genesis itself, but after seeing multiple attempts of Genesis emulation (Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, At Games Console, Sonic Classics Collection, Retro Gen (portable Genesis)), this sounds closer to the real hardware than any other port I have played (I have not tried the Android/iOS versions though so not sure about that).

The 3D effect of the Sega 3D Classics line is the most impressive use of 3D I have seen on the entire system. A friend of mine who is also a 3DS owner (who plays games in 2d), was even blown away by the 3D effect of Streets of Rage and agreed with me. I am not a fan of the CRT TV effect, it makes things more washed out than they should be IMO. I have my Genesis hooked up to a Sony Trinitron CRT TV and it looks much better than the CRT filter, in both sharpness and color.

I just love the amount of time and effort put into these releases. They could have just made another virtual console game, but instead optimized the games to make the best ports possible. Look at Nintendo's own 3D classics which are joke in comparison. I'm looking forward to future Sega 3D Classic releases. Of course I wish we had the same features that the Android version added, but hardware accurate emulation of the game is what matters most to me.

You dislike the CRT effect for all the wrong reasons. It should look blurry and it should have its colors a bit adjusted, but it didn't really need any curvature effect.

It's supposed to simulate a console that's hooked up through RF, something that caused some colors to bleed into others, which many graphic artists used for transparency effects and color gradients (waterfalls in Green Hill, colors in Vectorman and Garfield, etc).

Yeah, the CRT effect would actually be lovely if not for the curvature they added that really does not need to be there. Otherwise this version of the game is the best we've had since Jam and the original, obviously not counting the StealthTax version.

My brother has the 3DS version and it is fucking awesome. As some people have said, seasoned fans will notice some sound effects sound slightly different, like the signpost at the end of an act, bit it's the same in Mega Collection and other emulated versions. It's a great port, and the fact you can switch filters, change 3D depth, change the sound to MD1 or 2 and even change version by region makes this great.

Yeah but that was 11 years ago.

There's really no excuse for the oddities in sound emulation. But that's the problem, I guess. All we ever get is emulations. As such, the game is always locked to a standard 4:3 resolution and plagued by slowdown that was present in the original, quite possibly more if the emulation isn't up to snuff. S13D is about as good as the emulations are going to get, I think. Minus just a few quirks it's the original with a few new bells and whistles.

I'm just a bit surprised they didn't go with an entirely recorded sounds method. If it worked perfectly without issue for the Sonic and Knuckles Collection on PC, why not on the 3DS?

Edit: I'm talking about the sound effects, specifically. I know Collection used MIDI tracks for the music. That's why you do prerecorded music, too.

What? No it didn't. That collection used MIDI music, and it sounded generally crappy by most accounts (admittedly, some people do prefer it, but it DEFINITELY wasn't true to the original Genesis sound).

edit: derp, you mean sound effects. Nevermind I'm a stupid.

Those old PC ports had really poor quality samples though. I think everything was at like 8kHZ mono or something.

I'm surprised they are simulating an RF connection, RCA is much cleaner (no interference, sharper, brighter image). When I hook my Genesis up with RF it definitely looks like garbage so if they were trying to simulate that than I guess they would have been somewhat accurate. I play my Genesis/32x/CD with RCA and while colors do blend together and things are very slightly blurred, it is nothing like how the CRT filter looks.

I definitely agree the curve is annoying. Many CRT TVs later on were flat screen anyways. Since the curve is on such a small screen it makes it even more extreme than it should be, it is almost like a fish eye lens.
