Kay, so here's the rundown: When ever I boot up my computer and log on, it'll work fine for a minute. but as soon as I open something (For this particular instance Google Chrome), it starts fucking up. The desktop is supposedly unresponsive (by "supposedly," I mean I'll get the spinning "wait" cursor if I hover over it, but the screen doesn't turn white), and the taskbar is the same deal. Ctrl+Alt+Del works fine, but if I try to use it to bring up the task manager that hangs up as well. :argh: I've tried restarting multiple times, but no dice. And sometimes, the ENTIRE computer will lock up, forcing me to shut it down with the power button

I'm running on Win7 Ultimate, and this only started happening today. I'm at a loss at what to do, but I have a feeling that Windows Update might be the reason my computer is giving me grief...

Any suggestions?

What brand+model it is ?
Is the laptop louder than it used to be ?

It's an HP brand, and no, loudness isn't the problem. I wound up using a system restore to get rid of the updates, and it helped a bit, so everything seems to be fine now. (I hope)

Get a boot disc like the Ultmate Boot CD and use it to test your hardware, if that all comes up clear run some standard antivirus shit. If there's still a problem then you should be able to refresh your system without losing your files in recovery mode if you haven't deleted the backup partition. Can't quite remember what Win7 HPs let you do, though. After you've done all that, I might have a better idea what the problem is.

I think I've figured out the problem: Skype. Every time I boot it up, it causes my taskbar and desktop to freeze. I'm not 100% sure if it's the sole determining factor, but it's a good indicator.

EDIT: Yep, definitely Skype. The latest update for it causes the freezing problem every time it boots up. Really don't wanna uninstall it, but it looks like I got no choice. :/

We all told you it was Skype =P

I never got freezing problems, but when I took Skype off and put MSN messenger back on, my laptop was more responsive.

Lulz, I posted that before I went on SSRG (I don't get notified of replies, so... :P). But yeah, they devs are all saying that downgrading to the previous version will fix it until they patch it.
