As of yesterday, I am the lucky recipient of a Nexus 7 as well as a new Samsung Galaxy S4 phone (technically not a bday present, it just happened to arrive by mail on the same day). Double Android goodness ahoy!
Just discovered though that the Nexus tablets don't actually include a MicroSD slot, so you can't use your MicroSD cards full of
furry pr0n classic retro goodies straight off. It appears you will need to obtain a seperate USB OTG cable (these are dead cheap) and a USB card reader of your choice to get a connection between card and device. Particularly recommended for use is the
Nexus Media Importer app, though this isn't free, so just a heads up.
Does anyone know if most emulators will detect a MicroSD mounted in this manner, so I can run roms straight off of it?

Can't you just load the furry pr0n classic retro goodies onto the device? Mine's got 32GBs of RAM, and that's been more than sufficient for all my podcasts, games, pictures of sideboob, and music.

My Nexus 7 arrived yesterday as well. UPS guy left it on a fold-out chair on the front porch though, I have no idea when it actually arrived because those fuckers refuse to ring the doorbell ever. Anyway, got it all up and running. The first thing I did was buy Sonic CD. Also installed some of my Humble Bundle games.

I too missed this when I was looking through the specs, kind of took it for granted that there'd be one. Not a deal-breaker, but it is kind of shitty. You'd think there would have been room in the budget for a micro-sd slot.

I was kinda hoping that I could just stick to organising my files on a MicroSD to save on faffing around with ways to access an Android filesystem. I doubt you can really do much in the way of rom-organising on a tablet without resorting to rooting the tablet, and I don't quite know if I should really jump into that sort of thing already. I mean, I'm still wondering whether to register the device first, my mum thought it might be a good idea in case I ever lose or break it.

I use an app called ES File System to activate a local FTP server on my tablet, then access that on my computer. It's super-simple. Just click a button, it activates the server and gives you the info, then you type that into an explorer window.
Of course, you can also just plug it in via USB, and you'll get the same thing.

From what I've seen, the filesystem isn't all that difficult to work with. Plug the USB cable into your PC and you can access it that way, plus there appears to be several free file managers on the Play store that don't require root access. That should have you sorted as far as organizing files.

This one is cool:
http://www.amazon.co...d/dp/B009EPMYMY
Comes with a keyboard, good spec, decent price, expandable, HDMI out. It ticks all the boxes for me - also stock android.
Anyway, speaking as a guy who has a collection of these bastards... the iPad is better. That's the only one I use for personal stuff - all the others are just for work really.

Okay, why is it that no fucking shop near me actually sells a USB OTG cable? They appear to sell every other cable but that! I don't know how long these cables have been around for but surely you'd expect all brick-and-mortar shops to carry them.

Welp, ordering from Amazon with Express Delivery sure helped me out. Apart from when I ordered another cable earlier out of a desperate rush to get one delivered to me by tomorrow only to check my order later on and discover that I ordered one with a Mini-USB connector instead - *not* what I wanted! *Sigh* Will just have to receive it then send it straight back for a refund.
I have a question to ask btw: has anyone ever registered their Nexus tablet, or indeed any tablet? I'm wondering if there are any catches involved such as whether rooting the tablet will void my registration and/or warranty. I'd quite like to know as soon as possible so that I can determine whether it'll be okay for me to root this thing.

Oooooh, a bit of Googling actually uncovered this handy tidbit:
Root your Nexus 7 without unlocking the bootloader (and in turn wiping the device and voiding warranty)
Not that I've given it a go yet, but this sounds right up my street! Of course, perhaps I should play around with the tablet a bit more before I go ahead with this.

A little off topic, but was the 16GB Nexus 4 always $300? I seem to remember it being cheaper.

Nexus 4!? Uhm... my WiFi Nexus 7 was $250 (and I could've done better by ordering online), so $300 does seem a mite high.

That's what's on the Play Store now. 16GB Nexus 4 is $299. The 16GB Nexus 7 wifi model is $199. I'm guessing the smaller screen and HSPA+ radio justifies a $100 difference in price...? The 32GB HSPA+ Nexus 7 is also $299. But I seem to remember everything being cheaper before.
The Nexus 4 isn't even a 4G phone, either. I would get the LG Spirit 4G through MetroPCS, but the 4G service is rather shitty. Blegh.
