This probably should go in the supreme topic of other knowledge, but I'm just too damn excited. Maybe it's common knowledge and I'll be made to look a fool but whatever, I haven't been this excited about finding something in a Sonic game since I discovered the bonus multi-ball stages in Sonic Spinball (probably not the original discoverer, but I stumbled upon them by myself without the internets).

I've barely bothered much with Sonic Chaos in the past. I remember hiring it when it first came out, managed to finish it with all chaos emeralds and both characters in a matter of hours, and being very disappointed in the short and easy levels and boss fights. I bought the game on Master System for completeness and never really played it again.

I played it again last night, this time on the Game Gear. I was nearing the end and just before I hit the sign post for Electric Egg 2, I decided to hold a Super Peel out / Strike dash just before the signpost, so I could hear the theme song loop through at least once (I was getting through each level in about 30 seconds, without even remembering the level layouts).

After I had held up for 30 seconds while running on the spot, a chime sounded and stars began circling sonic - I had gained invincibility! Charging the Super Peel Out / Strike Dash for 30 seconds makes Sonic invincible. It only last for as long as you keep running after you release the up button, and is a pretty useless manoeuvre as it takes far too long to charge up, but still, I didn't know about this before. I think I found something new.

I thought you got temporary invincibility after releasing it, hence the name strike dash. So you're saying if you hold it down long enough the normal invincibility tune starts playing?

Old.

Also a similar thing was shown in a Sonic CD pre-release screens:

Are you sure that isn't the time travel happening in that screenshot?

That's an old version of the time travel effect (more similar to how it looks in the design documents, if I remember correctly), and similar to the warp effect I found a while ago in Sonic 1.

Regarding the opening post, I remember reading about that in the magazines back then... And I didn't know the multiball bonus stages in Spinball were supposed to be a "secret". =|

Aesthetically it's similar is what I tried to mean, anyway, unrelated haha.

To be fair, when you're in the process of time warping, by that point you ARE invincible. So it's actually very nearly the same effect.

Old? Not to me, I learned something new as well! The formatting on that page killed me though. I didn't realize it was still 1998.

Even while hacking Sonic Chaos I never knew about this, so that's pretty cool! I knew that after releasing the strike dash, Sonic is invulnerable for a few seconds and that's it. I guess I never thought to actually charge the dash for that long before. You learn something new everyday I suppose. (Even though this has been known for a bit now. :v:)

I knew about this when I was a kid. I'd use up half my Game Gear's battery time in one level, just waiting for that damn strike dash to get the stars.

Oh dear God, I remember this when I used to play this on my old Master System II as a kid. :0 Good times, good times.

Wow, new to me and I played the hell out of this game when I was a kid.

What was more mindblowing to me recently was that there was a menu in Alex the Kidd in Miracle world so you could select items you picked up. Seems obvious and simple now but there are just some things you don't notice when you're young.

Big fan of Chaos, and I didn't know this. I don't recall this being in the manual either, how were you supposed to figure this out other than sheer luck?
