Ah yeah. I see from that angle now... Better to just take it all from one standpoint and have one expectation. I guess I'll call them and try again. Hopefully my fiance's parents can remember where they bought it from so I can go get a three year old recepit from them and just have Sony fix it.
At least I know have my expectations lined up for next time. Too bad you can't just go in with Ubuntu like a broken PC and extract all of your data. lol

Did they say why you needed your receipt? Having worked in a video game store for quite some time and having friends who have sent in PS3s a few times the only time they asked for a receipt is when the system was still within it's 1 year warranty (or whatever extended warranty you have). I don't think many places offer a warranty over 3 years either. This just struck me as odd and you maybe got a stupid rep?

Oh. Well okay then. I'll try calling again tonight and double checking.
I mean shit, I even made the point "It's almost three years old AND was a gift, you can't seriously expect me to know where the recepit is can you?" as he went on to say "Yeah, sorry man.
I'll try again then let you know.

And right you were, I ended up getting a pretty stupid rep.
I called again and not only did they tell me that I can send it in receipt free, but that they can store my game saves on a flash drive if I send one in with the system. So... every problem I had is now solved, except that I'm down $100 because of it.

What's worse- $100 down? Or having to do buy a new console or find someone else to do the repairs, or maybe even try them yourself and having it mess up- inturn being unable to get at your game saves or losing them and having to rebuy another console and then have to redo ALL of that stuff all over again?

Not to try and be a debbie downer here, but how are they going to use a flash drive to backup your saves if the USB ports are shot?
Typically it's a lot cheaper to just replace the whole motherboard rather than try and repair stuff. So when they put the new board in it'll wipe your hard drive. I guess it's entirely possible they have some software, but it's also highly unlikely since to companies user files are very minor and they wouldn't want the software to leak out.

That's kind of what I had thought too but they told me to do it anyway. It's not like I don't have a few drives laying around so I'm not going to have to buy another one.
Either I get the save data or I don't... One way or another I just wanted the damn thing fixed and I'm finally getting that. lol
I was on the phone with Sony for probably a collective hour, making the point that the USB ports are shot so I'm sure they have some software or some other way of backing it up. I mean... what are the chances I got two different kinds of idiots, one right after another? Those chances are slim right?
-.-
