First time I've seen a used ring series arcade board on ebay. Only ever seen them sold new from distributors for $3000+ and it comes with the latest revisions of the only 2 games that run on a standard JAMMA stick and 6 button setup, so this is a relative steal.

Interesting, but what is the uh... research factor in this? It looks like a glorified PC and the games look like they would be identical to their counterparts. Is there anything of interest we could get from it because I doubt anyone wants to straight drop the $2000 and a community drive for it might be the only way to go...

For these games yes: I don't know if there are differences between All-Stars Racing and its PC counterparts. Chaos Code was set to be ported to PS3 but it appears to not have happened (yet?), leaving that one arcade only. I can't confirm that a PC version of MBAACC exists, but it is a update to the regular MBAA IIRC...
For other games though, not sure... you could use them to preserve the game, or you could get them to say HEY LOOK I HAVE ARCADE GAMES FROM 2011, or get them for your arcade...

The games usually aren't identical to their retail counterparts, and they can't be run without the proprietary firmware within the official boards, at least until they're emulated many years down the track.
This is how you play sega games on sega systems now, in this post dreamcast world.
Also, this notes the moment the current gen arcade hardware starts to leak into the second hand market, which should start to drive down prices on Chihiro and Lindbergh boards.

If it has a DVI output you could plug it into an HD capture card to get proper screenshots of those games.

Ringedge now up for sale.
Now all we need is a copy of Project Diva (and, to a lesser extent, Border Break and Shining Force Cross)

*bump*
Lindbergh DVD reader
First time I've seen this in the wild. Replaced the GD-rom system when they stopped manufacturing GD-roms. Rumoured to be HD-DVD compatible as Lindbergh games were supposedly intended to be distributed on HD-DVDs until the format died, which is why the external xbox HD-DVD drive is also supposed to also work with Lindbergh. Also carries forward to work on all post-Lindbergh Ring series boards too.

Based on the picture it looks like a completely stock pioneer dvd drive, inside a metal plate to prevent discs from being stolen. I have one like that in my PC, one of the most reliable drives ever made. If it is that, then it cannot be hd-dvd compatible.

Yeah, thanks for the confirmation, it didn't look that special to me either. I'm not sure how much stock to put in those HD-DVD rumours. I'm fairly certain the xbox external HD-DVD drive works with the hardware - acting simply as a standard external DVD drive, but I suspect that's the only connection between HD-DVD and Lindbergh / Ring*
Can anyone make out the words in the shiny label:
DVD DRIVE UNIT
SEGA ... ASSWIPE?
