With the modern games climate though, it does eventually bear the question "why not just switch it with Blonic and kickstarter it as a return to old platformers blah blah"
I encounter this question sometimes, and it confuses the hell out of me. More than once now people have asked, why are we putting our talents towards Sonic Overture and not an original game?
Because you can't do the same thing at all with an original game. A huge part of what makes Overture so appealing is that it's a prequel to an existing, well known and loved series with established concepts and lore, and it's playing on these things that make it interesting.
With an original concept, you're starting from scratch and have nothing to play with, you're defining everything from square one and can't build upon existing material, so it's a completely different entity and experience. The point of making a Sonic 4 is that it's a sequel. It builds upon what was established in the previous games and comes up with new ideas based upon those concepts and stories, it's that relationship and playing on those concepts that makes a large part of its appeal. Making an original game throws all that out the window and defeats the purpose. Do people really not understand this? They're not at all the same thing.
