The problems with Sonic 4 can't be fixed with a remaster or demake, nor can it be fixed by addressing any one or several particular problems. They're in every facet of the game, its offensive bile leaking from every pore of its being. The whole thing would have to be thrown out and done from scratch. It would have to be much longer, much higher quality, ACTUAL music, new stages, new story, Sonic Tails and Knuckles playable at minimum with at least their Sonic 3K moveset, I could go on and on. Their Sonic 4 is a colossal vacuum of unmet expectations. Every entry in the trilogy developed significantly further than each previous game. At the barest minimum, a true Sonic 4 should meet Sonic 3K's standards. "Official" Sonic 4 fails to do this. It fails to meet Sonic 2's standards. It manages to be worse than Sonic 1 in most ways. The only thing that is arguably better is graphics, but only technically speaking, as the art direction most of the time is significantly more bland and unpolished compared to the Genesis games. And the music? There is no excuse for how awful the music is. Sega has millions of dollars to throw around and some of the most powerful music forces in the industry, and for the successor to their flagship trilogy, something of unfathomable importance, they can't even do the music justice? Sonic 4 seems to go out of it's way to be as bad as possible in just the right ways as if to make a mockery of its Genesis predecessors. It is in some negative hell that can't even be grouped with the trilogy. Sonic 4's existence needs to be erased and not regarded in any attempt to create a true Sonic 4.

So brilliantly true it hurts :v:

@Sparks I agree, I'd love to see effort poured into making new 2D titles instead of wasting money polishing turds. We'll have to see what they do next...

Basically Sega should just hire all the awesome talent we have on this forum to make the next hit Sonic game.

Agreed entirely! I even suggest we name it Project Retro!

Uhhh, maybe not that name. Remember what happened last time we tried that?

So the solution could be to make an entirely different "Sonic 4", then.

Hey, there's two official and very different Wonder Boy IIIs, after all. =P

The portable versions of Sonic 1 & Sonic 2 are radically different from the consoles. The portable versions of Unleased, Generations, Colours and Lost World are fairly different. And we've had multiple radically different versions of Sonic Jump. So there's plenty of precedent for an all new Sonic 4.

we don't have a stellar track record of community projects, for good reason as it's hard to coordinate them- they either drown in drama like Retro, or spend two years debating the PIXEL PERFECT designs for flowers in Emerald Hill.

Trying to raise interest from a few amongst Retro and doing it yourselves though, that's different. With the modern games climate though, it does eventually bear the question "why not just switch it with Blonic and kickstarter it as a return to old platformers blah blah"

@The KKM I was thinking more along the lines of Sega hiring the best of what Retro has to offer and working together with Sonic Team in a studio, rather than a community effort à la Retro/Sonic 2HD :)

I encounter this question sometimes, and it confuses the hell out of me. More than once now people have asked, why are we putting our talents towards Sonic Overture and not an original game?
Because you can't do the same thing at all with an original game. A huge part of what makes Overture so appealing is that it's a prequel to an existing, well known and loved series with established concepts and lore, and it's playing on these things that make it interesting.
With an original concept, you're starting from scratch and have nothing to play with, you're defining everything from square one and can't build upon existing material, so it's a completely different entity and experience. The point of making a Sonic 4 is that it's a sequel. It builds upon what was established in the previous games and comes up with new ideas based upon those concepts and stories, it's that relationship and playing on those concepts that makes a large part of its appeal. Making an original game throws all that out the window and defeats the purpose. Do people really not understand this? They're not at all the same thing.

I can understand it, but I also think that considering the standard we'd hold a real Sonic 4 to, eventually there'd start to be people even in project wondering how to monetize it, which generally works best with a new IP

Of course, there's patreons nowadays...

A quick question. Was the 'activate a 7th chaos emerald' trick patched out? I'm turning it on in no save mode but it's not carrying over to the saved games.

So... how do I get my save data from Sonic 1, 2, and CD to transfer to a new Android phone? Simply installing the games from the Play Store didn't bring them over.
