I've recently started toying around with LSDj, a tracker for Nintendo Game Boy, where you can compose and play music directly on your Game Boy ( using a flashcart of some sort, or in an emulator). I'm loving it, but I'm wondering...is there something similar for Mega Drive? I would like to use that sexy beast called YM2612 to play some tunes, directly on my Mega Drive through an Everdrive cart.
I know there are Megadrive soundfonst for FL Studio and similar music composing software, but I would like to play directly IN the console, using real hardware. Is there something similar to LSDj?
Your options on PCs are quite varied though. Deflemask and VGM Music Maker are the best of the bunch for now.
I am working on some exciting stuff myself but sadly it is not going to be public...
Well, it least you can export music made in VGM Maker to VGM files and play them on MD.
There is a VGM player for SMD.
The VGM files VGM-MM creates are not quite right - it doesn't init the pcm, so when you play it on a real MD, the pcm isn't played (mostly affects the drums). Deflemask generates a proper VGM.
Anyway, Shiru ragequit the entire MD scene and deleted all his local copies of his programs, leaving their availability limited to the few mirrors that still exist, which are still lacking the latest versions of several applications (e.g. VGM2OPM 1.1). So you'd be out of luck as far as support or hope for future improvements go.
I just released a module player for the SegaCD over at SpritesMind. It works rather well, playing 4, 6 and 8 channel MODs. The only issue is if the samples fit in pcm ram - if they don't fit, I resample the longest samples until they DO fit. If you have less than 100K of samples, it sounds good. More than that is hit or miss. Anything more than 150K or so will clearly have instruments that don't sound right. Needless to say, a MOD with 500 or 600K of samples will sound like shit.
It works fine on emulators and real hardware... with one caveat for real hardware - if you spend too much time in the browser doing nothing, it hangs. No idea why. If you keep navigating the menu and playing mods, it's fine.
Anywho, this would allow you to use any normal tracker capable of outputting a standard MOD file to be used to make music, then you can play it back on the SegaCD.
Ooh, I like that envelope editor. Now if only I could stop sucking at FM Synthesis.
I like the waveform viewer myself. That is positively sexy. Though I wish the dev would drop the pretenses and say that he's selling the synth. "Minimum donation"? Come now.
