Presenting, the Urusei Yatsura: Dear My Friends Sega Mega CD Sample disc. It was included with this other Sega Mega CD sample disc I got from Japan awhile back. I scanned the disc and was able to dump it to the best of my ability.

Download Urusei Yatsura: Dear My Friends Mega CD Sample [Here]

Included in the download is a copy of the sample in BIN+CUE format, ISO format, the MP3's in 192/320kbps, and the original WAV files. It seems to run a little different from the final version.

I just hope it was a proper dump because it stops after a certain point with no way of continuing on. Where it does stop, it's where it should cut to some cutscenes like in the final version. I made a dump of this on two different disc drives and still comes up with the same results. At least if anything, it's worth having to see what the sample has compared to the final version.

One last thing I would like to note is how the ISO9660 header shows it's "WING_COMMANDER" instead of what's actually on disc.

Makes sense to have that name floating about on the ISO9660 header because Game Arts would have not long released Wing Commander (a port of the original PC DOS game) for the Sega Mega CD.

Slightly off-topic, I didn't know one of the producers for Wing Commander was Warren Spector. He mainly contributed for the instruction booklet :v:

Anyway, enjoy everyone!

Is there any way to check that a disc image dump is good without relying on seeing how far it plays?

I praise you for dumping this, although it has already been dumped long ago, multiple times.

Almost all Mega CD games are properly dumped by now properly, and the missing ones nearly all have at least a bin/cue.

Good to know. I was asking some people awhile back if this sample disc was readily available to download anywhere (aside from there not being many good scans of the disc). Thanks for that.

Weren't there a -lot- of forum wars on how to "properly" dump a disc image before? drx even said he planned to re-dumped a lot of discs because he wasn't happy with a process he used previously.

Proper rips are already being done.

iirc drx's dumps turned out bad because he followed the redump guide, and screwed up something (that guide has 1001 steps and all it does better than a bin/cue is offset corrected audio). I talked to him about mailing the discs to me so I could properly dump them, but he is afraid that the highly skilled and motivated, quality workers of the polish post office will eat his packages.

Thank you for this release, Orengefox. Even if it had been dumped already, it's always good being able to have some verifications on the dumps, from different people.

By the way, do you guys know if the Snatcher and Popful Mail Sample discs have been dumped yet?

Are these all Mega CD samples and what regions? Snatcher Mega CD bypassed Japan for some reason.

I was planning on making raw dumps of entire discs, including the TOC area (that has to be machine readable somehow anyway) in the far future when I start making my own money. I know these can be used to construct rips in any other form, as Orengefox has done here with his bin/cue... I know GerbilSoft gave me a Linux command to do this; I just have to go back and remember what it was.

Finally, where was this Urusei Yatsura sample shared before? It's not in TOSEC and not in Redump and does not appear to be in Hyperspin...

Already being done on Windows, note that not all drives can read everything on a disc equally.

Google. I think I know the original dumpers by proxy, but I don't have their contacts. They went and dumped all Sega/Mega CD titles they could into bin/cue back in the early 00s.

Now this is interesting.

Would those cover absolutely everything inside the CD, including subchannel data? Something like this, but for CDs?

There are already hundreds if not thousands of dumps like those. Sega CD is 91% complete for main channels in fact.

However subcode and pregap/postgap dumping is problematic for various reasons, most of them being 1) not all drives can read them equally, 2) most drives can't even read some of them, and 3) subcodes are not CIRC protected and often have errors straight from the factory, so you have to dump multiple copies of the same disc and average them together - and even that is of questionable accuracy, considering that some errors could be deliberate.
