Blast processing still wins.
Starfox/Starwing demo running on Mega Drive Without a SFX chip!

Wow. :O
Of course adding sound, actual enemy and ally AI, level scripts and the few textures the original used would no doubt slow things down, but seeing this performance in unmodified hardware is fucking impressive and (to me, at least) unexpected!

We did actually get very close to seeing StarFox-like gameplay on the Mega Drive
ResQ tried to emulate it in its bonus stages. But Psygnosis pullled the plug on the project before release. Still, that demo is more impressive

Good luck getting something playable. The framerate is absolutely horrendous. There's even an FPS counter that never goes over 10. No wonder the SNES needed that chip.

Real starfox is at 10...12fps most of the time on real hardware. It is not silk smooth as you see in emulation.

Now to wonder if the 32X would be enough to allow for a full speed SNES-like performance.

Well beyond that...
Stellar Assault has all Starfox has and a lot more, plus full freedom of movement (lot more calculation needs to be done to have that).

Come to think of it, you could probably do Starfox 2 on an SVP cart no problem.

I'm surprised you can say that after the video right above your post that shows the Genesis can very well pull something like this off with good framerate =P I'd say he has a good chance at getting something playable.

This. Here's a much better comparison, had to dig through YouTube to find a Starfox video recorded from an actual SNES and not an emulator (which, with the exception of bsnes/higan, tend to run the SuperFX/MARIO chip faster than the actual cart).
SNES on the left/top, Genesis on the right/bottom (depending on your browser window resolution)
Yes, the SNES original is still running at a higher framerate, but it's using the SuperFX chip. Stef's version is running purely on the 68000, I submit that if the Genesis equivalent were using the SVP chip that it would do barrel rolls around the SNES.

I believe the coder said that the demo wasn't optimised for the 68k, and if he/she were to go through and optimise it properly, all the features of the original game would run on a stock mega drive with no problems. Not sure if the coder was prepared to actually prove that though.

Here's interesting video - a comparison of the demo running at original speed, overclocked to 12MHz, then overclocked to 10MHz.
The middle part of the video (at 12MHz) is really smooth in places.
BTW: For those who might not know, this is the same Stef of Gens fame :P
Edit: Not sure why the video won't embed for me. Too many on one page? I'm set to 40 posts per page so I'm still on page 1.
Edit2: Figured out why the video wouldn't embed. Was inadvertently using an https URL

I just realised Mega Drive can run Starwing without SFX chip, but SNES can run Road Avenger without Mega CD.
A tie?

I'd say it's edged in the Mega Drive's favor, since Road Blaster still needs an extension beyond the SNES's stock capabilities to function, whereas Starfox can be made to run perfectly (if not better) on the Genesis with no modification to its hardware whatsoever.
