Apparently, before releasing the Xbox, Microsoft considered buying Sega and using their assets to enter the console marketplace.

Well I always thought that the Xbox was an evolution of the Dreamcast. it just sort of fits with the overall direction the dreamcast could've gone in if SEGA continued.
Regardless, glad this didn't happen. Rare became a mess thanks to Microsoft's meddling we probably wouldn't never have had any Sonic games ever again if it happened.

Read this earlier, and wow I'm glad this never happened. I can imagine Retro would probably die when come Hedgehog Day, Microsoft Sonic Studio's announces Sonic Free Riders 9: Only on Kinect.

There's a lot a physical evidence in the Xbox itself to suggest that it could have been built to absorb the Dreamcast. They both ran forms of Windows, the controllers had two memory card ports, original Duke Controllers had a much larger Xbox logo than necessary that conveniently fit right over where a VMU screen could fit. And also this story is three years old, albeit told from another perspective.

But on the other hand even if it the Dreamcast didn't have CE support I'd be damn surprised if the XBox didn't given it's by Microsoft themselves.

Apparently Sega and Microsoft were in talks of making the Xbox backwards compatible with the DC, but the plan fell through because it would've made the Xbox more expensive to make.

I heard it was an online thing - keeping the Dreamcast's many online services up and running while also trying to promote Xbox Live would have been awkward.
The Dreamcast is to the Xbox as Netscape is to Firefox. Sort of. Maybe.

Wow, how weird. I always thought that the two consoles had a lot in common, and this has kinda just sealed the deal.

So... does this mean the Xbox is the Dreamcast 2? Take THAT, people who are actually naive enough to believe in a return to the console market by Sega!
On the serious side of all this, the Xbox has always seemed like the Dreamcast 2 to me, or at least the true Dreamcast, while the actual DC was more of a Saturn 2.0. The Dreamcast, if Sega had continued in the console market, would have been like what the Wii U should've been for Nintendo: a sort of bridge between the last generation to the next. For example, if the PS4 and 720 specs that have been going around are at least similar to the official consoles', Nintendo will definitely lose that "hardcore audience" that they tried SO hard to get back by using a controller with buttons on it.
Anyway, like what Jason said, the Duke controller really does look like the Dreamcast controller. Even if that article hadn't been brought up, I would still believe anyone telling me that Microsoft had at least considered buying out Sega.

After watching Rareware go to shit after being absorbed by Microsoft, I'm glad it didn't happen to Sega. I don't care much about Sega nowadays, but there is still nostalgic value. I also don't own any Microsoft systems.

No. No it doesn't.
Honestly I always assumed X-Box existed because of Dreamcast's failure. They sure as hell took a lot of design cues from SEGA and were awful buddy buddy when it came to X-Box exclusive releases. The explanation in my mind has always been that because Microsoft lost their hold on the console market via Windows CE on Dreamcast, they took it upon themselves to enter the console market.
Toasty - While I don't like Micro$$$oft at all, it's not like their fate has been much better under Sammy. Even if SEGA ever does come back to their former glory, it won't be the SEGA we knew. So much has changed inside that company. So many creative minds we loved have left.

Sadly Rare was already shit before MS bought them. Many key people were gone even before MS bought them.
