Did I just use TVTropes as a source? Why, yes, I think I did.

Anyway, if the Modern Sonic gameplay isn't a reboot of the way we play the games, then what the hell is??

Having emphasis on open world level design to begin with (for me, this would go into Jak and Daxter territory, because hell, what's not good about that game's level design and its being not GTA but being just about as free to explore). Using the Genesis era as the basis of the new titles as well (Sonic 4 doesn't exist,
It's not hard to think of how this series could possibly be rebooted for people with an imagination.
*Unfortunately, this will most likely be the case.

You're just asking for a sandbox Sonic 1 - 3, which while cool, I wouldn't call that a reboot as much as a 3D classic title.

Don't. Mention. That. Name. Not around me, at least. I SWEAR I came up with the name SonicManEXE on my own. It doesn't help that my YouTube (the first place where I started using that handle) was created in 2007, almost a full year after 06's release. I didn't find out about SonicMan (or how bad the game was in general) for a few more years. It was just me and my Nintendo consoles.
