All this jerking off over Homeworld is making me want to give the series a go.

Homeworld is a great series. Cataclysm's quality is somewhat more contentious, but the original and 2 are absolute classics. The Homeworld games are the first and only truly 3D RTS games (in terms of mechanics).

Apparently Sega doesn't own the rights to Homeworld (at least not yet), as they'll be sold on a later date. An indie developer called teamPixel is now actually trying to secure the rights to Homeworld through crowdfunding:

Although I have to wonder, what if Sega still intends to buy the rights to Homeworld? That would put them in an odd situation where they'll be going up against teamPixel, and if the latter wins they would basically take the rights away from the original developers.

The problem is, considering the state Sega is in now, they'd have to promise to actually do SOMETHING with the IP if they were to acquire it, such as, you know, put the original games up on digital distribution, otherwise I have no confidence in them doing anything with it.

Seriously, they could EASILY make a quick buck just by doing that, and yet even THQ didn't think to do it.

Overall, SEGA spent more money on this auction than any other developer.

Ah that's the SEGA we know and love, needlessly throwing money around at any opportunity.

No, that's Volition; Koch Media bought them.

Although I suppose, now that Sega owns Total War and the company behind some Warhammer 40K games, we're in for Total Warhammer 40K or something.

It's not that they just threw out a ludicrously high bid for the sake of it though, I believe Bethesda was the second largest bid at 23.3 million dollars.

Might already be known, but SEGA's made a blog post about this: Notice of SEGA's Acquisition of Relic Entertainment and Some IPs Owned by THQ Inc.

26.3 million by Zenimax, the parent company of Bethesda, actually. SEGA had the largest bid with 26.6 million bucks: http://www.neogaf.co...ad.php?t=509654

Shoot. I knew a numerical value was 3 less than what SEGA bid. Got the wrong number.

Relic's games now have SEGA as publisher on Steam. At least the Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40k games.
