If you can't max out your 80mb line, don't worry: few things can max it out. In fact even your own network hardware may be incapable of it. I'm on a 80mb fiber line (fiber to the switchbox in the house, cat5e from there to me), and I get 40-50mbit because my router can't handle more. If I connect the cat5e directly to my computer, I get 10mbyte/sec easily though. But only with torrents, I've yet to see a SINGLE connection that could max out my line. Nor am I concerned about it.

Oh yes, I did take cables and routers into account. I have the "Billion 7800n" wireless router with the EWAN port, and is capable of 100Mbps. I am using cat5e cables from the "Openreach" modem to the router (Openreach doesn't have Cat6 ports apparently).

The problem is, if my connection was always 65Mbps, I'd probably have no issue right now and shut my gob. I just can't get my head around why it can go upto 76Mbps now and then, but a minute later, down to around 40Mbps. Losing that many Mbps is not on. I know that my equipment and line is capable of the 76Mbps, because it's shown it before.

As you can tell, I'm a fussy git =P

I've always found our Infinity Business line to vary drastically on SpeedTest.net.

Here's one I just did:

(Maidenhead isnt 200 miles away, our GeoIP seems to reckon we're up north for some reason!)

That's with the following sync speeds:

Annoyingly, we're on "Infinity 1", they won't upgrade us to Infinity 2 unless we pay an extra £5 a month (even though residential premises get it free). Good old BT Business eh?

According to the stats, if BT would stop being dicks, we could get around 50mbit down sync and 9.5mbit up:

There is a program called "TCPoptimizer" that can do wonders with internet speed on Windows. My 98SE or XP machines could not get even close to half my connection speed, after running the program I can easily max out the connection.

You are fussy over nothing. Your internet contract says that 80mb is the max they can do, but not the minimum, so they have the right to reduce your speed to a certain point if they don't have the capacity. This is one possibility. Another is that your router just ain't that fast, connect your internet directly and see if it's more stable. And thirdly, like I said before, not many things can max out your line to begin with. It's entirely normal for things like speedtest to not reach your maximum (it's a stupid flash based benchmark and may drop speeds just because your machine can't play the flash interface fast enough). I don't know offhand any single site that can max out my 80mb line with one connection. I only have multiple downloads running when I'm maxing out my line.

And anyway, if you don't like it, go back to dialup.

While I wouldn't have worded it quite as bluntly as Meat Miracle, he's basically right. Sorry =P

It's probably because before the fibre, it was always at a constant rate. I did try connecting directly into the fibre modem, but same issues. Anyway, as long as it's going to stay 65Mbps or more, I suppose I can't complain. The ping and upload is pretty constant which I am happy with.

And Meat Miracle, I would only go back to dial-up just to hear them connection noises again =P

Also, as it turns out, it really will be possible to get Fiber to the Home in future. More expensive than I thought it would be, though.

Glad to see I wasn't completely wrong. :specialed:

330mb down and 30mb upload (!!!) for Ł396? Sounds awful to me. Upload should be 100mbit at least. My 17€ line does 25mb upload, and I had it for 4 years (maybe 5).

To be fair, BT isn't known for cheap pricing, and I speak as an ex-employee. They roll the tech out which is then implemented by others at more sensible prices.

I was more pointing out the ADSL-esque ratio between down and upstream.

It's odd that romania has fucking 100/100 lines widespread while places like Britain just can't.

I would love that 100Mbit upload... I only get 10...20. Higher speeds cost a lot more and are intended for businesses... I pay 31€ for 150/20 with cable TV.

100Mb upload? Yowsa! I would love that, even for the download!

On a further update, I have contacted Plusnet via their automated troubleshooting about my download, because I tried again this morning and was getting 15Mbps!

Anyway, that FTTH price is actually cheaper than I thought it was going to be, although I'm still not going to pay it =P

Ah, but that's done so the ISP can make more money selling business lines with a more equal ratio. Why would a home user ever want to do something more than consume things? </sarcasm>

I do wonder if the country concentration plus the whole socialist history with regards deploying utilities might account for it. Doesn't help that our infrastructure hasn't had significant investment in years, which is only why now they're beginning to make a big deal about fibre.

Got a text from plusnet:

We have tested your connection and found the PPP session is down so we've raised your fault to our suppliers for further test. We aim to provide an update within 24 - 72 hours.

Its the same in Bulgaria, we have dirt cheap 100MBit LAN and Fiber(to the basement). The internet is distributed to each village by the only landline telecom, and then you get a service either from them or a local reseller.
We have ultra high demand for down link(can you guess why?) and the prices are low because the minimum wage is $200.
