While searching for more concrete specs on the Ring Edge 2, I came across this:

As you can see from the above comparison rasterization lacks the correct 3D depth information of ray tracing. This is the problem the PS4 and Xbox 720 shall be facing next year as they go up against Sega's Orbi.

We can gleen from this that Square Enix is probably not supporting the Sega Orbi, thus Sega feeling the need to publicly slam the company.

- Brian Holzhauer

MODEL4 can today conclusively say that Sega's next generation arcade board the RINGEDGE 2 shall form the basis of the SEGA Orbi next generation digital download based games console.

Specs on RINGEDGE2/Orbi are currently a closely guarded secret.

However, it is thought the PC Tower based system houses an Intel CPU, an AMD or nVidia GPU acting as display driver and a PowerVR low power ray tracing reference platform.

These are pretty cool though:

This is the same fucking idiot, and I'm sure Brian Holzhauer is the same person, that constantly spreads rumors of SEGA returning to consoles. I swear he's been keeping up this game for 5 years.

That was the same guy who had insider resources for the Dreamcast 2 coming out last year, or something.

The SEGA guy who slammed Square used to work for them. I believe he was the president at one point. This was before the Enix merger.

Also he said that through his personal Twitter.

Despite all the BS, there might have been some merit to these rumours. Now that I have a Ringedge of my very own, I see that the PSU has now been incorporated into the casing, unlike the Lindbergh which had an external PSU. This makes the ringedge essentially a sega branded PC, the only thing missing is an optical drive (for which room coul be made, or they could continue with an external drive, or it could be unnecessary if games are downloaded from All.net), and a usb or jvs compatible controller. They could have easily modified it and sold it to the home consumer ala Neo Geo AES.

They also got the old Naomi band together with a number of Ringedge 2 releases from Triangle services, G.rev, French bread, and Arc Sys, most of which were compatible with a standard stick and buttons set-up, making a universal controller quite simple. The biggest selling point would be online matches compatible between the arcade Ringedge 2's and the home consumer version.

However, many high-profile Ringedge games required a touchscreen (border break, shining force cross), which makes a universal control setup more complicted, which may have been a significant reason why this wasn't explored. Also, these games can be easily ported to PC, making a Sega specific PC kind of pointless and limiting the user base.

Still, all of this is just wild unfounded speculation.

If SEGA release a new console, I will seriously sell myself at auction.

Edit: It ain't happening.

This guy also posted on ANN and AnimeOnDVD under the name TornadoTatsumaki. He did a thread 3 years or so ago claiming RingEdge was a new console, and on ANN he's claimed to know anime industry stuff from people at Best Buy. Class A idiot right there.

He also was on Next Level or some other forum as AGES claiming that Sega was making a Naomi 3.

Edit: Oh lord, here's a whole thread with him BSing on the "Orbi" http://www.sega-16.c...-MrSega-only%29

Edit 2: Correction: His ANN name was GrilledEelHamatsu.
