I get that they might not have 43204382 artists ready to retexture everything, but could they not even sort out the low draw distance?
That would decimate this game. The low draw distance is a huge part of the visual appeal, it keeps the backgrounds visible at all times and the level geometry melds into them in a really convincing way. Seeing more of the stages would only break the illusion of being in a massive world, as they're actually quite tiny!
And that's the funny thing, the original game was so good at leveraging the strengths and limitations of the system that I feel it still stands as one of the prettiest games ever made, even without the glitz. The new polish really isn't adding much- if I were a stupid person, I might even say they're retroactively cheapening the product, y'know? But hey, more NiGHTS. Never a bad thing, but I can think of other games that deserve and actually need a remake. Panzer Dragoon Saga is in desperate need of a new coat of paint. (EDIT: Oh that's right, they lost the source code, OOPS)

I'm not saying get rid of the fogging - that needs to stay else you'll get all sorts of crap in the background (though it would be interesting to see what NiGHTS looks like without it).
But in both the Saturn and PS2 versions... the fogging didn't work properly. The idea is to stop geometry from "popping" into the level so abruptly, but you can still see it happening because the draw distance is too short. We have the technology, we can fix this. Sega haven't.

YES YES YES! This is awesome, I always wanted to play NiGHTS into the Dreams. It a game I never got to play for the Saturn, I only play that Wii version game that was some sequel. I just wonder what the release date for it will be.

Download only. No deal. I'd have rather had an EU port of the PS2 version, but we all know now with the financial shit Sega is in this won't happen.

Turns out it might not just be almost a straight port of the PS2 version. Apparently Sega have worked with fans to refined it.
From the thread I linked in my last post:
Pretty cool. Let's hope that's helped a lot.

Also, apparently NiGHTS' biggest fans are directly involved with the port of the game, so I'd imagine they'll make Sega aware of the problems with the PS2 version:

How do I know?
We've been working on the game. This is the real deal.
This was the one title that caused me to chase my dreams for years to work at SEGA. It's with a great sense of pride I can say I achieved that dream years later. The day I sat down infront of this project at my desk I just couldn't stop smiling.

Important to note the latter quote comes from TRiPPY (for those who didn't click the link). If anyone would make sure things are right it would be her.

Sega is going to print some much needed ducats with this one. I'm excited to play it on PC.

Even if it's a lazy port, I'd say it's still worth it just because the original NiGHTS is fun as hell, even if remarkably short. Definitely a sort of Arcade Score Attack style game, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch. It's much more fun than JoD was, though I can already see people taking issue with the fact NiGHTS is actually affected by air drag and you need to pulse the speed button to keep momentum.

Did the PS2 rerelease get 60fps? It'd certainly be neat to play the game at a higher framerate than the original as well.

The only difference in controls in the PS2 version is the more sensitive movement. It's an improvement compared to the original where the movement controls lagged a bit.
Plus, seeing as how TRiPPY is in on this thing, I'm sure it will be up to standards. She's the biggest NiGHTS fanatic I've ever seen.

Hah, I completely forgot how anti-drm / online content you are. I understand though. It's going to be difficult though to keep it up given the whole digital approach that is to be made with SEGA.
And the whole involvement of NID.com and TRiPPY can only mean that not only is SEGA looking to their fans more recently (See Sonic CD / Taxman), but this could only turn out as great as Sonic CD did for us Sonic dedicates. Things are going well; and it's encouraging news to hear of career prospects being generated from online comunities.
