That's a cool idea yes, but I'd rather they put in some of the current stages unused in VS mode primarily. If it's with a new engine they might be able to get the water stages to work (say Chemical Plant wouldn't be a great VS stage). Oh and make Knuckles selectable if he's a playable character.
Actually I wonder how a split screen co op game would work out. Take away Tails' respawning, give him back level interactions from the beta version, might be a cool way to play the main game.

Speaking of scrapped Sonic 2 levels, if Dust Hill is put into a Sonic 2 remake, what would become of Desert Dazzle as potential Sonic CD DLC?

If Martians land and are very hungry, how are we going to make sure we have enough for the Venusians?
That's basically the kind of question you just asked.
Except my scenario is probably more likely to happen.

Dust Hill and Desert Dazzle are basically the same level except Desert Dazzle is slightly more detailed, unless you insist putting Desert Dazzle in a Sonic 2 remake instead.

My point – although I don't think I should have had to spell it out – was that Sonic 2 is not very likely to receive a remake, and much less to include DHZ if it does, with the result that your question about what to do if that does happen is almost completely moot.

Ah, then we're on the same page. I know a Sonic 2 remake isn't likely to happen with Dust Hill in it. That's why I brought up Desert Dazzle in the first place. This is a thread about hypothetical ideas after all.

Hypothetical? I would love for them to remake Sonic Crackers, but less dry so my butter won't evaporate when I spread it. Oh, and Mercury Mines with Ashura as a boss.
I really would like for Sega to just leave Sonics one, two and threekay unchanged, save for those time-attack modes I keep harping on about. Sonic CD had the perfect template for those things, even on the original release. Sounds like I'm easy to please, but I've wanted this since the disappointment that was Sonic Jam.

Most remakes or ports of the classic games were completely unchanged anyway, Jam and Sonic 1 GBA were the only times they really put any enhancements over them (if you consider S1 GBA an 'enhancement'). Having them add a few extras here and there for a port couldn't be that bad, especially since they'll likely release a more loyal rerelease all of a month later.
Time Attack would be a nice addition but I think we could have a little more.
