THis is interesting, hack or not. Ask him for photos or videos of the cartidge, or the rom if he has dumped it.
Also, someboy should tweet this to Yuji Naka or any other original Sonic Team member to see if this is legit. If it is, maybe they can ask for a rom...SEGA wanted to have one, they wanted to include this in megacollection, so I'm sure they would do it. Even if we never get it, if this is legit it needs to be dumped for preservation.

Shiiiiit. Honestly. That actually scared me. I have no idea why. I'm crapping my self now.
Anyway, looks like a hack to me. Sonics standing face looks really off, but why would it? Also, Sonic doesn't rotate on slopes at all, which is the first thing I would remove in a hoax for this.

It doesn't look like a hack to me. It looks like a fan game (like MMF or GameMaker). Chilling to see, but I find it hard to believe there would be buildings overlapping the mountains like that. Yes, it had 7 layers of scrolling, but you have to assume reasonable limitations of the hardware too. The way the camera scrolls also gives me that vibe (although it's not unreasonable for an early prototype camera to work differently). The video also focuses on the prototype graphics (because this person knows we're interested in this and wants to get us excited).
Plus, it seems a bit coincidential that we had a topic asking about a Sonic 1 prototype just days ago. This TheNEK0san joined YouTube yesterday just to upload this one video. Seems like they're trying to trick people. Not that I have a problem with that. But I hope they come out and reveal who they are eventually.

It should be fake. The original demo was much faster than this (in fact, Sonic moved much faster at one point but had to be slowed down). For some reason, the frame rate on the screen doesn't look like it even goes anywhere near 60fps.
Also >sonic 1 proto. No Japanese person says this. Nothing to see here in my opinion.
Another thing to note is that the original demo also had the blue border around the screen like the final version would have. This one is completely black. Also, I don't see any kind of rainbow banding or any other video issues on the screen.

By the chance this is a demo or beta, the guy (or gal) who uploaded this video is gonna have some explaining on how they got the beta. The Sonic 1 beta is considered to be the holy grail of all the pre-releases in the series, and how this person got this is a story worth knowing.
