And, I'd like to note that everyone only mentions this frame's use in Sonic CD for the "I'm outta here" bit, but he also uses it when walking off of the edge, and falling down from the top of the second 3D-ish ramp in Palmtree Panic Act 1.

Really? I've never noticed that. I always seen the game use his walking or spinning sprites when falling off an edge.

As I said, it's only if you walk off of the edge of the second 3D-ish ramp in Palmtree Panic Act 1. It displays as you fall down. It also locks the horizontal controls while you fall. Give it a shot! I've seen it in the PC port, Gems Collection Port, and Taxman port.

I use this sprite in Sonic 2 Secret Rings Control/Edition because it's the best fit for a jump cancel sprite and it doesn't require someone else drawing one for me.

Honestly, I can see that, yeah. It does seem to fit a jump cancel better than a "regular" landing.

Fan games have been using the same sprites, over and over, since the beginning. The reason why you never see original sprites in fan games is because nobody can or wants to take the time to create them, and if they can, it's usually only for an original project. In this case, this sprite's "pose" is SUPER COOL to anyone because Sonic looks really serious, and he's never posed like this in any other classic game... so everyone wants a piece of that "cool" pie in their fan game. That said, sprite edits are OK, but they never really show any of the true potential a person might have to make something original.

On another note, I find that the most enjoyment I get out of any fan game is when they're trying to be their own production with fun, original ideas, and not another copy or sequel of any other official Sonic game.
