I felt this deserved its own thread (the news was posted by Slingerland in the Sonic CD re-release thread).

I've seen a lot of sentences like this one in this thread and this Sonic CD port is what has shelved RSN. The new website, the forum threads, etc are all gone as a result and rightly so. SCD pays and advances Tax's career and RSN, well, doesn't, haha. I've got shit I've been doing, too. Enjoy the ride.

And there we have it. Slingerland and Taxman's work and involvement in the Sonic CD re-release has "shelved" Retro Sonic Nexus. Slingerland stated later on in the thread that "shelved" does not equal "cancelled" though let's face it. It's gone man. It's a profound shame given I believed this final merger would finally result in an awesome end-product though it seems now that it was not meant to be. The reason I wanted to post a thread about it was to gauge other members' thoughts on the "shelving" of the game.

I feel that though Sonic CD deserves to be re-released in all of that Retro Sonic Engine glory the fact that it sacrifices the most promising and (IMO) best Sonic fangame of all-time (from what I played of its previous Sonic XG incarnation) makes the news unsettling. Sonic CD is a game that I have personally played the hell out of over the last decade that has already seen two re-releases whilst "RSN" promised to be something exciting and new. With this in mind I am going to express the (probably) unpopular opinion that I would have taken RSN over a third re-release of Sonic CD.

Come at me bro.

SPEED EDIT: Never forget:

Damn shame, but after Sonic Adventure Remix died I've lost hope in ever seeing a completed fan game.

Though Hez through me for a loop by completing a fangame! So congrats Hez you've done what 9/10th of people can't do.

Having been a part of the Sonic Nexus side of things back when it was still fairly new (not the newest, but for a good chunk of the middle), I was naturally upset when I heard the news... and back when we were talking about joining up with Taxman on the Retro Engine, getting drawn into Taxman's own objectives did have me a little worried about what could happen in the future project (not to mention my own obsolescence since I had somewhat limited access to the engine from the go, not to mention I just didn't know how to drive it very well)... but you know, In the long run I'd say I'm much happier to have seen someone in this hobby some of us enjoy achieving mainstream success than to simply play a great fangame like what this amalgamated project was shaping up to be. Sure, it's possible that Retro Nexus might have become this awesome new thing...

It's neat though, depending on the reception of this port... well, I don't want to get my hopes too high, because we are talking about SEGA and there is a lot of political weirdness associated with them and Sonic... but this could prove to be the start of something amazing. If nothing else, it kick starts Taxman's career, and I'll be following him eagerly.

That's life, unfortunately. Making something high quality takes a lot of work and dedication, and combined with Nexus switching tech two or three times over the years, well, life caught up with everyone involved and that's that, really.

Can't really be helped and isn't much of a surprise.

How altruistic! It could've been a pretty big milestone either way, but I can't imagine anyone saying this is the best outcome with a straight face when Taxman's the only one who wins here. I mean, no hard feelings or anything- given an opportunity to profit over a fan project, it's really the only sensible thing to do- but a port of Sonic CD with hq2x and a new spindash is the last thing any of us should be cheering for. Yes, there's more to it! No, I don't care!

"Brutal" is the most appropriate word I can think of to sum up this saga. Never mind beautiful baby smooth XG and Nexus, I'd been waiting patiently for the Retro SDK for 5 years now. I've got my own little project that's stuck in perpetual limbo now because this engine is the only one I'd ever want to work with. ProSonic was stillborn and E02 is a totalitarian stronghold. This is the first real tragedy I've witnessed in this community that wasn't riotously funny to me.

Sure, I can fully understand that sentiment (more than most probably given the circumstances)... but it isn't like there won't eventually be an engine that's kind of like it. And chances are, it'll end up being produced by this very community.

EDIT: And honestly, I don't think E02 is all that far from the level of Retro Sonic (the way it was back in the day, I don't know anything about how it changed after SEGA got in on it), it just uses a more... hackerish approach to its scripting. And I haven't really explored the whole toolset of E02 yet either.

Give or take another 5 years. I really, really hope I won't still be posting here in 5 years.

Worst thread ever. You should feel shame for starting it.
