Wow, my first post here at Retro. A couple of months ago I bought 4 shirts from Yahoo Auctions that had these artworks I've never seen before: Posted Image

Now I'm not sure if I'm right, but I think some of these shirts are from that store in Japan that sold only Sonic merchandise. I remember there was this person that had a blog which feature a visit to the store and it had some of these shirts. Sadly I can't find it, but there is a section about it on the Sonic Gear site. Looking at them, I've noticed that at least the artwork on the black shirt seems to be an alternative design to this one.

It makes you wonder what other artwork we haven't seen from Yuji Uekawa.

That Sonic with a skateboard is from the Sonic Adventure era. It appears to only have been used on a few pieces of Japanese merchandise that were produced at that time, like this pencil tin:

Speaking of which, I finally got my hands on a piece of Sonic merchandise I've been after for a while - this absolutely gorgeous Japanese pencil box from 1993! It features some really nice, rare artwork that doesn't even exist on the internet yet (to my knowledge), so I scanned it - hopefully someone can clean it up a bit and possibly even restore/isolate the stock art poses (Super Sonic and the punching Sonic above him are just beautiful).

Could you scan them at 600dpi? Cleaning them at that resolution is easier! Saving as PNG would be a plus (you can save as TIF or BMP and then open in Gimp or even MS Paint and save as PNG).

OK, I'll see if I can do that. I just did these real quick with a public scanning station at the library (which is still a heck of a lot better than using my crappy home scanner). I'll post 'em tomorrow, if I can.

Alright, I managed to get 1200 dpi scans of that pencil box today (even though the computer refused to convert one of the files to PNG). Have fun!

Oh, very nice! It's great to finally see decent quality scans of that pencil box; the artwork is lovely.

I'm rather jealous =P Well done on managing to find one of these, they're extremely hard to come by from what I can tell.

I now spotted some spots of dirt I forgot to remove on his gloves and on his muzzle but I'll share anyway :)

Sweet! I (mostly) isolated Super Sonic, in case anyone else wants to download him/clean him up further.

That is ap retty piece of art I've never seen before. At least, not in its unaltered form.

I always loved that artwork. This will probably sound hugely disrespectful, and I don't intend it to be, but I would love to see that piece with the Japanese Sonic from that era in there.

I started this for fun, but I sorta hit a brick wall with the Japanese text. I know it says "Kawaii yatsu ni wa, toge ga aru"/ "for a cute guy, he has spines." But no matter how I typed that in a translator, it never gives me the exact text that's on the poster. I also have no idea what the text on the bottom say or what the logo is on the down right hand corner. Is there anyone that can help me with this?

かわいいヤツにわ、トゲがある。

If you're on Windows, you can go to the keyboard/language settings in the control panel and install Japanese input so that you can type directly in Japanese. Surely beats trying to get something useful out of software translation!

As for the logo on the bottom right, it is Dreams Come True's logo for their Wonder 3 concert tour (it possibly says Wonder 3 beneath it in block letters). I can't for the life of me find a picture of it anywhere, though; I may have seen it only a YouTube video of their tour years ago. I thought for sure it was the album cover somewhere, so I'll just have to keep looking.

Overall, though, I think you've lost a lot of the charm of the original by not recreating the chalky look of the lines on Sonic in the background. It's supposed to look like a close up of a drawing, and with those sharp, thin new lines it just looks bad.
