This is gonna rock! I'm glad that it has been started at least.

Hey StephenUK are you still doing your Sonic CD 2?

Yeah I'm still working on that, but that is one of those projects that requires a lot of thought and planning to get it to be as good as I want it to be. As a result I've done more design work and planning than I have at actually putting the necessary features in the game, although half of the base work for the engine is done.

Great! I'm looking forward to it! And this one too. If you need any tiles or anything thrown your way just send me a PM.

I can't really do much but offer words of encouragement for this project. I look forward to having it on my PSP!

I had a go at something similar a while back

Unfortunately I don't really know enough about the actual hacking process for my work to be helpful

Well if anybody wants to help contribute, then they don't even need any hacking knowledge. Mock-up pics using someones interpretation of the art in 16bit will always be helpful, even if only to use as a base for improvement. Music will be awesome as I still have never touched the music side of hacking, and as always, comments and criticism will help push this hack forwards.

A serious Sonic topic? You're askin for miracles! v.png

Anyway I had this on my mind and I should just go on and get it out of the way. Making a genesis version of something that isn't out is difficult, correct?
You only have a few screenshots and developing the Genesis game after the real game or a demo at least comes out would be less strenuous in my opinion.
But who am I again? Nobody.

The screens give you a good idea of what the levels look like and you are probably going to add filler at the parts you don't see in shots.
This looks very time consuming to someone who is a common primate at these types of things.

Wow Matwek, that foreground art, the checkers especially, is a very accurate classic reproduction of the original. Nice work!

The majority of the level layout until the game is released will just be made up in such a way that I can test aspects of the game, such as the vines, the badniks, the background scrolling, music and other such features. Once the game is released, that's when I'll dedicate time to recreating the layouts, although there may be sections modified, mainly the homing attack sections. If a section requires homing attacks on enemies to reach, I'll modify it so timed bounces on the enemies can get you there. Not only does it require more skill for the reward, but it keeps the retro feel we're familiar with.

No, although I doubt I'll be using any sprites from the previous games. I might have a look for some spritesheets that have a retro look, but at the same time have a more modernised look.

Perhaps something like... These?

That's actually a pretty nice spritesheet, still has a retro look but updated a bit. I'm not a fan of the advance style spindash or jump animation but I could work around those easily enough. I'll see what other people think and have a look at some others in the meantime. Sonic's sprites are something I can use to help fill the gap between now and Sonic 4's release, whilst still getting work done.

There's a classic spinball near the bottom. =P

This time, I'm sure it has only 15 colors, since it uses the Sonic 1 Moto Bug palette (so the Sonic palette, if I'm not mistaken). I also tweaked it a bit (reduced the white stripe, as Matwek said, and some small tweaks. The original was posted here).

If the final sprite will try to stay more close to the original classic but still a bit different, I took a look at the Favorite Sonic Sprite topic, and I found this one from Blast Processing and this one by me, both made trying to combine the Sonic sprites from Sonic 2 and 3 (the main difference is the predominant one).

Yes, those sprites look the bollocks!

I say forget about combining classic and modern. It would be a much much sweeter experience for everyone who hates Sonic in Sonic 4 to have him looking as classic as possible.

I'm making a combine and refine sprite right now, using the best elements of 1-3k while trying to get him looking as close to the Classic Japanese artwork as possible.

If that sounds like your thing Stephen, then I'll get that all done for you.

Ok so I made a start on the HUD ring, and although I know it doesn't look right, I'm struggling to work out exactly what I'd need to do to fix it. If any of our sprite artists here can find the problem and fix it, I'd be more than grateful.

I basically just tore it up and started from scratch, though I wasn't looking at any reference material so it looks even more off than yours.

That being said I don't really like the idea of this project or what little you've put out. Good luck, though!

Let me guess.. you think that this repercussion of Sonic 4 to match the fanbase's ill needs is immature also?
When you look at the project it seems a little "This new game is gonna be so terrible that I should just go and make my own version of what it should be" and that my friend just leads right over to "Fan syndrome" where they think their ideas shouldn't be put into direct competition with the actual game but just to make it better. I don't see the game like that but others could by reading the topic. But the definition of better?

Holy hell this is hard to explain. I hope somebody understands.
