Did you grow up with PAL or NTSC Sonic? 50hz or 60hz?

NTSC, but then by the time I'd played Sonic 1, it didn't matter anymore. I grew up with a SNES, not a Genesis. Sonic CD (PC), my friend's copy of Spinball, and the Sonic & Knuckles Collection were pretty much all the classic Sonic exposure I really had up until Mega Collection.

PAL-versions was the default European standard (NTSCs weren't availlable and would've required modding).
I grew up with a NES, but envied some friends and relatives owning a Mega Drive (for obvious reason rolleyes.png ).

I learned about NTSC being faster than PAL when I got my hands on Sonic Mega Collection on GC and playing in 60Hz-mode.
I haven't notice Sonic 1 being faster on NTSC, I thought that the difference was in the music (and Labyrinth Zone's wavy underwater-effect), no difference noticed in the timer (by going through the stages) or other games either.

So PAL it is.

NTSC Sonic ftw.

I kinda like some of the slow musics of the PAL version though.

Do you guys think it's worth buying a PAL Megadrive (Console only) for $55?

I'm from Europe, but very lucky for me - I happened to have a multisystem TV, and played on the US Genesis. (I knew the difference already back then)

I think it's a little too much, depends on it's condition I guess, I paid around 40$ (30 EUR) for my MegaDrive I which is in a great condition!

I grew up with PAL Sonic but I prefer the NTSC versions, because it's much more fluid, the PAL Version are just too slow, especially the music in Sonic 1...

I grew up with the PAL Sonic games on the MegaDrive. When I got Sonic Mega Collection for the GC, I initially played it in 50htz mode, which ran at the slower usual speed. I found out that my TV did support 60htz in the end, and after switching, the games all ran at the much faster usual speed, which really does make a difference to ALL of the games. From Sonic 2 onwards, the difference is barely noticeable, but they still do run a slight percentage slower (Music included, because I once tested this out for a forum by plugging the MegaDrive and GC in together and having one through my TV speakers, and the other through my surround sound).

There'll always be a special place in my heart for the slower games, and I actually like Sonic The Hedgehog at it's slower speed, with the incredibly slow music. It feels like a lot more of a relaxing game.

I never had a megadrive/genesis as a kid..Although if I had it would have been PAL.
I first played the games on PC, so I have no idea if they were slower or faster, I'm sure they were emulated, so most likely NTSC.

I only recently bought a megadrive so I've never compared the speed on both versions...Although since there apparently is a difference, I may do this at some point!

I'm still not sure what is different between NTSC and PAL but given that I live in a US territory and that I had a Genesis not Megadrive, I guess it's safe to say NTSC is what I grew up with.
