How would you redesign Sonic the Hedgehog? So as to divert some of the circlejerkiness in the Needlemouse topics

I'm going to transfer this post from the Needlemouse Concept Art thread.
And they don't have to. See, I find flaws in the designs of both Classic Sonic and New Sonic. Classic Sonic looks too unathletic, and New Sonic looks too arrogant. What they need to do is find some sort of happy medium.

I took 30 minutes to alter a picture of Classic Sonic posted earlier in the thread. It may look a bit shoddy, but for illustrative purposes, I think it does the job.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/6/8/1950...HybridSonic.png

Note the longer legs, longer body, larger hands and feet, slightly sharper quills, longer ears, shorter nose, and green/hazel irises.

I have to wonder why so many people spring for the green eyes when they try and mix the two styles because it's not like there was any particular reason for the green eyes in the first place. I also don't think that trying to mix the two versions of the eyes by making the pupils massively dilated is a very good option, and making them reflect green would kinda make them look like camera lenses.

I drew this on an index card because it was convenient, but there are a few things I want you to notice about him:
  • Broad, rectangular shoulders. All the greatest heroes had them, like Batman. It's a sign of strength.
  • The kickass running animation from Sonic 2 beta.
  • A belt. It could be a utility belt, but it doesn't need to be.
  • A chin. All the greatest heroes had them, like Batman. It's a sign of strength.
  • Only three spikes, all on his head. Now his friends can call him a spiky headed jerk, like Cloud.
  • A belly button. Sonic was so unrealistic until I made this masterpiece drawing.
  • No sidemouth. Sonic was so unrealistic with it.
  • Side-eyes. All the greatest Foxtrots had them, like Jason. It's a sign of strength.

This is perfect. Proportions are spot on, has the best of both main design principles, doesn't draw too much attention to itself yet still has a cooler-than-you vibe.
Everyone can go home now.

Agreed, I really like what that design is trying convey a lot. Very reminiscent of the classic design.

I agree with this being perfect for the proportions while blending in the modern details. I prefer these proportions to what is being used now simply because it has more of a classical animation quality to it.

I wouldn't mind them adding in some more details though. Sort of along the lines of how Mario got details in Smash Brothers Brawl I mean. Some texture to the parts that look like they could have texture, shoe fabrics, glove fabrics, etc.

Honestly though, the look of Sonic himself isn't really something that weighs to heavily on my mind when I'm thinking about how good the game actually is.

This, with smaller hands, no weird brow crease and sharper quills, like these:
http://www.powersonic.com.br/desenhos/media/ova5.jpg
I also wouldn't mind these quills either, they're close to what the original design had:

Anything very close to his japanese original models or the Sonic CD or OVA is also accepted.

I LIKE his green eyes, I think it makes him look more alive than the black eyes, but if it can't be helped, then it can't be helped.

I personally don't see the need to redesign Sonic for Needlemouse, I have nothing to complain about the 1998 and on design - I prefer it over the classic design anytime. But, If was requested to me to redesign Sonic for this specific game, would look a Sonic CD and new design hybrid like this:

v.png My tablet sucks

Me likes, as long as those quills are hiding others, I can't think of his Sonic X model. Almost as bad as his earlier ones in the shows.

That placement in his eyes.... Those pupils are so...

DERP A DERP!

I made an adjustment to the offending eye, if Yuski doesn't mind.

That just makes it look even better, methinks.

Not to mention it reminds me of MAH BOI...

This is a good mix. I like Sonic better when he's cuter and shorter - he is supposed to be a hedgehog, after all.

You may remember my redesign from the DOODLES! thread:

It could still do with a few changes, but you get the basic idea. If Klonoa can wear clothes (and get away with it), then so can Sonic.

Okay. Now it's perfect.

Seriously though, my favorites for Needlemouse would be the Sonics that ChadTheCartoonNut draws though. The shorter stature mixing in with modern Sonic details is perfect in my opinion.

My design was more of a joke. I'd never want SEGA to use that design to be honest. As it is, I've been working and constantly redrawing that to look more in line with Classic Sonic while still trying to retain some of the details of New Sonic and my own art style. Which is funny... I'm beginning to realize that my own art style looks like Crash Bandicoot and J. Axer's stuff more and more. I mean, when it comes to my style, I work closely to realistic details that the actual animals have and mixing that with the cartoon elements of usual Mickey Mouse and other stylistic toons like Ren & Stimpy, or (in Sonic's case) to the respective character it's based on. However...

.....Is that really a bad thing? I mean my design didn't truly offend anyone that much did it? All I think I really needed to do was make them a helluva' lot shorter (and Sonic's spines shorter) and I would've had it in the bag, right?

Hahahaha! Seriously dude... drink everywhere!

Now just give him a 12 inch cock and he'll be perfect. All heroes have them, it's a sign of strength.
