Mr. Jemery Parish, executive editor of 1UP.com, did an article about similarites of video game music with songs from musical bands/artists, and in the same article on page 3 demonstrates some musical similarities of Sonic music with popular music.

The most surprising one of all to me, at least, is the near-stark similarity between Sonic CD Japan's "Little Planet" and State's "Pacific 707". Now THAT blew my mind.

Now this stuff probably wouldn't surprise a lot of people, but I thought I'd just share something interesting here. This is the kind of stuff that somewhat inspires me to mash up music from games with popular music.

    Discuss.

My god, the Double Dragon theme wasn't original... :_(

Awesome article, and the connection between 8-bit Sonic 2 and Sonic CD is quite interesting.

That 8-bit Sonic 2 match to 808 State is pretty ridiculous! Just more proof that Nagao is Hataya, I guess.

  4. Hmm...

Anyway, this is a very awesome article!

I don't remember the article saying it wasn't. The comparison is on the flip-side page, so Dragon Force swiped from Double Dragon.

None of the comparisons really surprise me, video game compositions often take from popular music of the time.

My father was into some really eclectic stuff, and he once told me that Metropolis Zone was a remake of some song. I can't remember what he said now, and he's dead so I can't ask him. This man had like 400 cds and was a historian, so when he says something with that sort of certainty I'm inclined to believe it.

The one with Banjo Kazooie was pretty interesting to me.

    Wow, what the fuck.

This is like that time I realized that Fumie Kumatani enjoyed ripping off 90s dance music artists. How common is this, exactly?

I guess Hataya just really likes 808 State.

Damn, that remix really does sound like a sped up version of Pacific State.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I just looked on eBay for the album that included this song... and there it was, with only 5 minutes left in its auction. It cost me less than 8 euros. :)

    Nice purchase! =)

Really cool article, yeah. Always wanted to write something like that as well, but I never really gathered up enough examples to justify it.

(EDIT: Whoa, this is my first post here, really? The hell o_O Could've sworn I had made at least SOME posts here before.... Ohwell! *shrug* )

Great article! Can't believe I'd never noticed the Duran Duran thing! (although it's even been mentioned elsewhere on here...)

Have looked all over here, and have seen no mention of this blatant 'homage' to Metropolis Zone
(This mash-up kind of illustrates it, in a hard-to-compare alone way)

Also, the keys in The Caesars Jerk It Out are a dead ringer for part of Marble Zone, I reckon

...and don't get me started on the Offspring rip-off that is Green Forest in Sonic Adventure 2 (1:10 onwards!)

(Should this be in the Almost Music Comparison thread? Who knows...)

  19. I made a thread about it and it was promptly deleted. >=(

Robo's theme from Chrono Trigger matches the Rick roll?

    I KNEW IT. :D

Nevertheless, this is a heaps interesting article. Nice coincidences and stuff.
