What we currently know: There is no proof to suggest Dust Hill Zone was ever implemented.
And there's not even proof of Dust Hill Zone being the name for the desert level.

No, which means that we have no way of knowing for sure one way or the other. It may have been meant for the level that would have been associated with that mockup, or it may not. All we know about DHZ for 100% sure, without doubts, is that it is the name for MCZ in our proto.

Because it debunks the myth of those sprites ever being a part of a zone in S2.

this should be in the other one, since its very important. Usually stuff that isn't very noteworthy goes in here.

It could be in either one, actually. It doesn't really matter, as long as it's archieved.

Has anyone noticed that at the beginning of Heroes, Sonic is running through a desert zone that looks a LOT like the DHZ mock-up?

SO you think Sonic Team went back into Sonic 2 and said, "Hey, let's bring back Dust Hill in the beginning of this game!"
Seriously... that's like the guy trying to convince people that Red Mountain was Genocide City.
And well.. we have no proof that the level was called Dust Hill, but remember that "Dust Hill" was the old name of Mystic Caves so... maybe at once point Dust Hill was Mystic Caves type thing...
never mind

I never put those to DHZ anyway... I always thought they looked out of place and were scrapped for being so. I don't see how this proves that DHZ didn't exist.

I think just the layout of Dust hill was planned and made in a different rom, like a level testing rom of some sort. As It was never put into S2 ever in its Developement.

Dust Hill is in the beta version, and was changed its name to Mystic Cave for the final version. =P
Please, stop refering to the desert as "Dust Hill", it makes no sense...

I'm gonna be honest, at the time sonic 2 was released I could get it in the local game store so I'm not really a huge sonic 2 nut, I'm more interested in sonic 1 so I don't really care what happened to the dust hill zone, one thing I do find strange, reading articles of members of the dev team, they all speak about a desert zone, so there must have been one and secondly why would Brenda Ross have lied about doing the desert hill and it being playable (
http://www.shadowsof...iews/brenda.htm). In other interviews you can read that she was quite upset that her art didn't make it, so she should have remembred, I think that the dust hill zone never even made it to this early prototype and did exist in more early prototypes as was said in other interviews that it was taken out in early dev cycles.
I wouldn't give up hope yet
