Hey all,

I received my Sega Nomad this morning from the US, it looks in real good condition and came with 2 games and a power lead. Anyway, I put Sonic in and plug the power lead into the converter plug I bought (which is a good expensive one). I turned the Nomad on and the screen come up but was just black (with no sound) so I turned the Nomad off and removed the game, put it back in and turned it on and it came on properly (Sega logo came up) the battery light was on then after litterally 10 seconds the screen just faded out and it turned off! I can't get it to turn on again now at all! checked the fuse in the converter plug - even tryed my US Saturn converter plug (which I KNOW works as I played the Saturn earlier) but nothing is working!!

Am I missing something or is the Nomad faulty? I have already emailed the seller (although he has 3000 feedback with 99.7 positive - and the only negatives were about shipping times).

Anyone any ideas???

I have a Nomad, but I've never had that happen.
I use my Megadrive 2 lead, it works with no problems.
That or NiMH rechargable batteries.

You say you were using a converter plug, what power output did you set it to? (Assuming you're using one that has that function. I'm only asking because this'd be the sort of information that someone else is bound to ask and I'm pretty sure that'd help ruling out that as the problem)

I haven't had one, but I would suggest trying batteries to make sure it is the power supply problem and not the hardware itself. Or maybe its something to do with PAL NTSC games, but I'm fairly sure the European and US games are the same (my Sonic 3D Flickie's Island cartridge has Sonic 3D Blast sticker underneath the Euro sticker).

Now that you mention it, I think mine has the same problem. I thought it was the adaptor's fault...

I have a Nomad. There was a problem with it where the AC Adapter would cut out randomly. Turns out I needed to resolder one of the capacitors. (Unfortunately, while doing this, I broke off the brightness knob. I taped it back down so it at least works, but it isn't perfect.)

I have a nomad. Haven't used it in a while but as far as I know it works fine... I'm also in the UK and I've been using a standard UK megadrive II adaptor (I know the electrics are different but it doesn't seem to have done any harm, and I hardly use the nomad so I don't really care).

The Nomad's AC adapter *is* the standard MD2 AC adapter. (Model MK-2103 in the US.)

My Nomad doesn't have that problem. It works fine other than a few crushed pixels that have left three orange blotches on the screen. However, it came like this from ebay and I knew about it whenever I got it but hey, it was a bargain as I only payed $52.00 US for it. I already had an adapter for it plus I have a cigarette lighter outlet hook up in my mom's car so I can make it feel portable in style. Plus the car's battery is an almost unlimited energy source for my Nomad. (Yeah I don't drive. Are you surprised? You shouldn't be with me.)

With mine usually jiggling the adapter on the Nomad-end works. Seems like some of the components there definitely need resoldering. From my understanding it's fairly common and is why people talk about the Nomad being sensitive to moving around.


In the next couple of weeks I hope to be able to open it up and take a look at it like that.

having a need to jiggle power connector to get something going on can suggest that the connector has got offboard, I have repaired one Nomad with such issue.

The issue in 1st post seems to be related to something different, probably what has been pointed out Gebrilsoft - loose capacitor.

Yeah. For what it's worth, I use my Nomad on a PAL MD2 power supply and haven't had any issues with it. In terms of play length? Well, it chugged along happily for long enough for me to complete Sonic 3 with all Emeralds, I know that much =P

I am thinking I have the same problem, I may do this to mine. I have no battery pack, so fixing the AC input is my only option. Other than that, nice little piece of hardware. Wish Sega had thought of its other hardware when making it though....

Hey people,

I managed to sort my Nomad -thanks for all the replys. It turned out to be a faulty power adaptor. I went into the city where I live and managed to get a Megadrive 2 power lead and it works perfectly now. It's a UK lead aswell which is nice.
